About the Ideal Weight Calculator
The Ideal Weight Calculator estimates a healthy body weight for your height and gender. Because there is no single agreed definition of "ideal", it shows results from four well-known formulas alongside the healthy weight range derived from Body Mass Index (BMI).
The formulas
The Hamwi (1964), Devine (1974), Robinson (1983) and Miller (1983) formulas were originally developed for medical use, such as dosing medication. Each starts from a base weight at 5 ft of height and adds a fixed amount for every inch above (or subtracts for every inch below). They give slightly different numbers, which is why seeing all four — and their average — is more useful than any single value.
Healthy weight range
The healthy range here comes from the widely used BMI band of 18.5 to 25, applied to your height. This range is generally a better guide than a single number, since a healthy weight depends on your build, muscle mass and frame. If you add your current weight, the gauge shows where you sit relative to this range.
A guide, not medical advice
These figures are a general guide for healthy adults and are not suitable for children, pregnancy, or athletes with high muscle mass. For a personal weight goal, talk to a doctor or registered dietitian. Nothing you enter is uploaded — the calculation runs entirely in your browser.
