At what age is Annaprasan done?

When the child first takes solid food - the sixth month for a boy and the fifth or seventh for a girl in the classical reckoning, which is why the tradition keeps to even months for boys and odd for girls. In practice the sixth to eighth month is the common window.

What is fed first?

Kheer or sweetened rice, given by the father or the maternal uncle depending on the family, with a little ghee and honey in some traditions. Bengal calls the day Mukhe Bhaat for exactly this.

How are the dates chosen?

Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, a daytime muhurat, and the Moon in one of the gentle and fixed nakshatras - Rohini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, the three Uttaras, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Anuradha, Shravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Revati or Ashwini. Purnima is allowed in the bright fortnight; the Rikta tithis and Amavasya are not.

Is a pandit needed?

Most families call one for the Ganesh puja and the sankalpa, but the rite itself is domestic - the feeding is done by the family. Where no pandit is available, a puja at home inside the window is accepted.

How far ahead does this list go?

Which items are put out for the child to choose?

In many regions a plate with a book, a pen, coins, a ball and a little earth is set before the child after the feeding, and what the child reaches for is read as a hint of inclination. It is a custom rather than a shastra rule, and families that skip it lose nothing. About the Annaprasan - First Feeding Muhurat

Annaprasan (Mukhe Bhaat, Annaprashan) is the sanskar of offering a baby the first solid food - often kheer or a little rice - after months of milk. A muhurat is chosen when the Panchang is supportive for nourishment and a gentle start. This page lists those dates with the shubh time window, nakshatra and tithi, computed by Panchang Shuddhi from the same Lahiri data as the daily Panchang.

The paediatrician decides when solids are appropriate, not the almanac. If the baby is not ready, has allergies, or is unwell, wait. A shubh tithi does not replace feeding guidance, and this page is not medical advice. Regional custom varies: some families do Annaprasan in the sixth month, others later; some invite a large gathering, others keep it at home.
