Who is Kubera?
The treasurer of the gods and lord of the yakshas, son of Vishrava, guardian of the northern direction. The aarti names his family - Idvida, Manigrivi, Nalkubera - and his closeness to Shiva, whose devotee he is in the Puranic accounts.
When is he worshipped?
On Dhanteras and the Diwali night puja, alongside Lakshmi, and at Akshaya Tritiya. Households also worship him when a safe or cash box is newly installed, since he is the keeper rather than the giver of wealth.
How is Kubera worship different from Lakshmi worship?
Lakshmi is prosperity itself; Kubera is its custodian. So he is invoked for retention and safekeeping - that what comes in should stay, and be spent rightly - which is why the two are worshipped together at Diwali rather than one instead of the other.
Which direction is used for his puja?
North, the direction he guards, so the cash box or safe is traditionally placed to open towards the north and the yantra kept on that wall. The yantra suggestion tool covers which yantra suits a chart.
What is offered to him?
Yellow flowers, akshat, dhoop and a ghee lamp, with kheer or a white sweet and dry fruit. Coins or a token from the cash box are placed before him during Dhanteras and taken back after the aarti.
