Praacheen kaal mein Mahidhwaj naam ke ek nyaaypriya aur dharmaatma raaja the, jinse praja atyant prem karti thi. Unka chhota bhai Vajradhwaj kroor aur irshyaalu tha. Bade bhai ki keerti aur praja ke prem ko woh sah na saka, aur uske man mein dwesh ki aag jalti rahi.

Ek raat mauka paakar Vajradhwaj ne apne dharmaatma bade bhai Mahidhwaj ki nirdayata-poorvak hatya kar di, aur paap chhupaane ke liye shav ko ek peepal vriksh ke neeche gaad diya. Akaal aur akaaranmrityu (anyaaypoorvak mrityu) ke kaaran raaja ki aatma ko sadgati na mili - woh pret ban kar usi peepal vriksh par nivaas karne laga aur bhookh-pyaas va peeda ka ghor kasht bhogne laga. Raahgeeron ko bhi woh pret-baadha pahunchaane laga.

Ek din us maarg se ek tapasvi (dhaumya) muni guzre. Apni divya drishti se unhone us pret ka dukh aur uski sachchaai jaan li. Muni ne Jyeshtha maas ke Krishna paksha ki Apara Ekadashi ka vidhi-poorvak vrat kiya - upvaas, Vishnu-pooja aur jagran - aur us vrat ka sampoorn apaar punya raaja Mahidhwaj ki pret-aatma ko arpan kar diya.

Vrat ke us apaar punya ke prabhav se raaja turant pret-yoni se mukt ho gaya. Divya roop dhaaran karke, muni ko aabhaar-poorvak pranaam karte hue, woh vimaan par baithkar swarg-lok ko prasthaan kar gaya.

Seekh: Apara Ekadashi sikhaati hai ki is vrat ka punya aparampaar (apaar) hai - yeh aatma ko paap, pret-yoni aur dukh se mukti dilaakar uchch sadgati pradaan karta hai. Doosron ke uddhaar ke liye kiya gaya punya sabse shreshth hai.

Frequently asked questions about Apara Ekadashi Vrat Katha

When is Apara Ekadashi?

On the Ekadashi of Jyeshtha Krishna Paksha, in May or June. Apara means boundless, and the vrat is named for the limitless merit ascribed to it. It is also called Achala and Bhadrakali Ekadashi in some regions.

What is the story?

King Mahidhwaj was murdered by his jealous younger brother Vajradhwaj, who buried the body under a peepal tree. Because the death was violent and unjust, the king's soul found no rest and became a preta in that tree. A passing ascetic saw his condition, kept this fast, and dedicated the whole merit to him - and the king left for the higher worlds.

How is this different from Mokshada Ekadashi?

Both allow the merit to be offered to another, but for different situations. Mokshada is kept for ancestors suffering after death, generally one's own forebears; Apara is remembered for a soul held back by a violent or untimely death, and in the katha the ascetic was no relation at all.

Can someone keep it on behalf of a person who has died?

That is precisely what the katha shows, and it is the practice associated with this Ekadashi. The fast is kept in the usual way and the sankalpa names the person for whom the merit is intended. Nothing in it requires you to be related to them.

What does the story ask of the reader?

Compassion for someone with no claim on you. The ascetic gained nothing from what he did and gave away merit he had earned himself. The katha closes on exactly that point - that merit earned for the deliverance of another is the highest kind.
