Surya Dev aur unki patni Sangya (Chhaaya) ke do santaanen thin - putra Yamraj aur putri Yamuna. Bhai-behan donon mein atyant gehra sneh tha. Yamuna ka hriday komal aur prem se bhara tha, jabki Yamraj ko praaniyon ke praan harne ka kathin daayitva nibhaana padta tha.

Yamuna apne bhai Yamraj se baar-baar aagrah karti rehti - "Bhaiya, ek baar mere ghar bhojan par padhaaro, main apne haathon se aapko bhojan karaaungi." Par apne kaaryon mein atyant vyast Yamraj har baar baat taal jaate aur "phir kabhi" kehkar reh jaate. Yun hi bahut samay beet gaya.

Ek baar Kartik maas ke Shukla paksha ki Dwitiya ke din Yamuna ne phir se prem-bhara nimantran bhej kar bhai ko bulaaya. Is baar Yamraj apni behan ke is achal sneh aur aagrah ko taal na sake. Raaste mein unhone narak ke jeevon ko mukt karte hue, aanand ke saath behan ke ghar ki ore prasthaan kiya.

यमुना अपने भाई यमराज से बार-बार आग्रह करती रहती - "भैया, एक बार मेरे घर भोजन पर पधारो, मैं अपने हाथों से आपको भोजन कराऊँगी।" पर अपने कार्यों में अत्यंत व्यस्त यमराज हर बार बात टाल जाते और "फिर कभी" कहकर रह जाते। यूँ ही बहुत समय बीत गया।

एक बार कार्तिक मास के शुक्ल पक्ष की द्वितीया के दिन यमुना ने फिर से प्रेम-भरा निमंत्रण भेजकर भाई को बुलाया। इस बार यमराज अपनी बहन के इस अचल स्नेह और आग्रह को टाल न सके। रास्ते में उन्होंने नरक के जीवों को मुक्त करते हुए, आनंद के साथ बहन के घर की ओर प्रस्थान किया।

भाई को अपने द्वार पर देखकर यमुना की खुशी का ठिकाना न रहा। उसने स्नान-ध्यान करके, घर को सजाकर, भाई का तिलक किया, आरती उतारी, मिष्ठ-पकवान बनाकर प्रेम से भोजन कराया और उसके दीर्घायु व कल्याण की कामना की। बहन के इस निष्काम प्रेम और आदर-सत्कार से यमराज अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुए।

प्रसन्न होकर यमराज ने यमुना से वर माँगने को कहा। यमुना ने कहा - "हे भाई, मुझे यह वरदान दीजिए कि जो भाई इस दिन अपनी बहन के घर जाकर, स्नेह से तिलक करवाए और उसके हाथ का भोजन करे, उसे आपका (यम का) भय न रहे और उसे अकाल-मृत्यु न आए।" यमराज ने "तथास्तु" कहा और यह भी वर दिया कि इस दिन जो भाई-बहन यमुना में स्नान करेंगे, वे यम-यातना से मुक्त रहेंगे। तबसे भाई दूज (यम द्वितीया) का पवित्र पर्व मनाया जाता है।

शिक्षा: भाई दूज भाई-बहन के पवित्र और निष्काम प्रेम का प्रतीक है। बहनें इस दिन भाइयों की दीर्घायु, आरोग्य और उन्नति की कामना करती हैं, और भाई उनकी रक्षा का वचन देते हैं - स्नेह और कर्तव्य का यह बंधन सबसे पवित्र है।

When is Bhai Dooj celebrated?

On the Dwitiya of Kartik Shukla Paksha, the second day after Diwali. It is also called Yam Dwitiya and Bhau Beej, and in some regions Bhai Phota, all marking the same day.

Is fasting required?

Not in the way other vrats require it. The observance is the sister's tilak, the aarti and the meal she serves with her own hands, and many sisters simply wait to eat until the brother has been fed. The day is about the meeting rather than about abstaining.

What is the boon in the story?

Yamuna asked that a brother who visits his sister on this day, receives her tilak and eats food from her hand should have no fear of Yama and no untimely death. Yamraj granted it, and added that brothers and sisters who bathe in the Yamuna that day are freed from his torments.

How is it different from Raksha Bandhan?

The direction of the gesture and the season. On Raksha Bandhan the sister ties a rakhi in Shravan and the brother promises protection. On Bhai Dooj, in Kartik, the brother comes to the sister's home, where she gives the tilak and feeds him - it is her hospitality that carries the blessing.

What if there is no brother or sister to visit?

The tradition is generous here. Cousins and close relatives stand in the place of siblings, and where no one is at hand the tilak is offered to the moon in some families.
