On Fridays, and above all on the Diwali night puja, when it is sung after the Ganesh-Lakshmi puja in the Pradosh or sthir lagna window. Households keeping the Vaibhav Lakshmi vrat sing it every Friday evening before breaking the fast.
Why are Uma, Rama and Brahmani all named?
Because the aarti treats Lakshmi as the one Shakti wearing three names - Parvati, Lakshmi and Saraswati - and calls her jag-mata, mother of the world. It is a deliberate widening: the goddess of wealth here is not a specialist but the whole feminine divine.
What is offered while singing it?
Kheer, kheel-batasha and white or kesar sweets, lotus or red flowers, and a ghee lamp - on Diwali night the account books and coins are placed before her too. The items are set out in the Lakshmi puja samagri.
Should the Ganesha aarti be sung first?
Yes, that is the settled order - Ganesha before Lakshmi, on Diwali and on any Friday puja. He clears the obstacles; she is then invited into a house that is ready to hold her.
What does the closing verse promise?
That whoever sings this aarti with devotion attains happiness and wealth, and that the goddess does not turn away from a home where she is remembered daily. The emphasis in every verse is on nishdin, day after day, rather than on one night of the year.
