Saraswati nadi ke tat par base Bhadravati nagar mein Dhanpal naam ka ek dhani aur dharmaatma vaishya rehta tha. Uske paanch putra the, jinmein sabse chhota Dhrishtabuddhi atyant durachaari nikla. Woh kusangati mein padkar sharaab, jue, vyabhichaar aur galat aadaton mein doob gaya aur pita ka kamaaya dhan us-jaise vyarth kaamon mein udaata raha.

Baar-baar samjhaane par bhi jab woh na sudhra, to dukhi hokar pita ne use ghar se nikaal diya. Sambandhiyon aur mitron ne bhi munh pher liya. Dhan aur sahaara dono khone par Dhrishtabuddhi chori karne laga, par pakade jaane par maar khaata aur dar-dar bhatakta. Bhookh se vyaakul hokar woh van ki ore nikal gaya.

Bhatakte-bhatakte woh Ganga-tat par sthit Maharishi Kaundinya ke aashram pahuncha. Muni ke tej aur shaanti ko dekhkar uska man drvit ho gaya. Usne haath jodkar apne paapon ka praayashchit poocha - "He muni, mujh paapi ka uddhaar ka koi saral upaay bataaiye."

Daya-mayi muni ne kaha - "Vatsa, Vaishakha maas ke Shukla paksha ki Mohini Ekadashi ka vrat karo. Jaise Bhagwan ne Mohini roop dharkar daanavon ke moh ko nasht kiya tha, vaise hi yeh vrat manushya ke paap aur moh ka jaal kaat deta hai." Dhrishtabuddhi ne shraddha aur niyam se Mohini Ekadashi ka vrat kiya, Bhagwan Vishnu ki pooja aur jagran kiya. Vrat ke prabhav se uske saare paap dho gaye, moh ka jaal toot gaya, aur ant mein use divya, shuddh sadgati ki prapti hui.

Seekh: Mohini Ekadashi sikhaati hai ki yeh sansaar moh-maya ka jaal hai. Vrat, bhakti aur sachhe pashchaataap se manushya is moh se mukt hokar saral, shuddh aur saarthak jeevan paa leta hai.

सरस्वती नदी के तट पर बसे भद्रावती नगर में धनपाल नाम का एक धनी और धर्मात्मा वैश्य रहता था। उसके पाँच पुत्र थे, जिनमें सबसे छोटा धृष्टबुद्धि अत्यंत दुराचारी निकला। वह कुसंगति में पड़कर शराब, जुए, व्यभिचार और ग़लत आदतों में डूब गया और पिता का कमाया धन वैसे ही व्यर्थ कामों में उड़ाता रहा।

बार-बार समझाने पर भी जब वह न सुधरा, तो दुखी होकर पिता ने उसे घर से निकाल दिया। संबंधियों और मित्रों ने भी मुँह फेर लिया। धन और सहारा दोनों खोने पर धृष्टबुद्धि चोरी करने लगा, पर पकड़े जाने पर मार खाता और दर-दर भटकता। भूख से व्याकुल होकर वह वन की ओर निकल गया।

भटकते-भटकते वह गंगा-तट पर स्थित महर्षि कौंडिन्य के आश्रम पहुँचा। मुनि के तेज और शांति को देखकर उसका मन द्रवित हो गया। उसने हाथ जोड़कर अपने पापों का प्रायश्चित पूछा - "हे मुनि, मुझ पापी का उद्धार का कोई सरल उपाय बताइए।"

दया-मयी मुनि ने कहा - "वत्स, वैशाख मास के शुक्ल पक्ष की मोहिनी एकादशी का व्रत करो। जैसे भगवान ने मोहिनी रूप धरकर दानवों के मोह को नष्ट किया था, वैसे ही यह व्रत मनुष्य के पाप और मोह का जाल काट देता है।" धृष्टबुद्धि ने श्रद्धा और नियम से मोहिनी एकादशी का व्रत किया, भगवान विष्णु की पूजा और जागरण किया। व्रत के प्रभाव से उसके सारे पाप धो गए, मोह का जाल टूट गया, और अंत में उसे दिव्य, शुद्ध सद्गति की प्राप्ति हुई।

शिक्षा: मोहिनी एकादशी सिखाती है कि यह संसार मोह-माया का जाल है। व्रत, भक्ति और सच्चे पश्चाताप से मनुष्य इस मोह से मुक्त होकर सरल, शुद्ध और सार्थक जीवन पा लेता है।

What is the connection with the Mohini avatar?

The sage Kaundinya makes it directly in the katha: as Vishnu took the Mohini form to undo the delusion of the asuras at the churning of the ocean, so this fast cuts through the net of delusion in a person's own life. The name carries that parallel.

Who was Dhrishtabuddhi?

The youngest of the five sons of Dhanpal, a prosperous and righteous merchant of Bhadravati on the Saraswati. He fell into drink, gambling and worse, wasted his father's wealth, was turned out of the house, and ended up stealing, beaten and starving in the forest before reaching Kaundinya's ashram on the Ganga.

Does a single fast really wipe out sin?

The tradition is speaking of a turning rather than a loophole. What the katha describes is a man who came to a sage, admitted what he had done and asked for a way - and then kept the vrat with discipline. The fast marks and supports that change of direction; it is not presented as a way around it.

What is the vrat for?

For clarity. It is kept when a person feels caught - in a habit, an attachment, a confusion that will not lift - and wants the mind uncluttered. Freedom from moha is a subtler request than wealth or progeny, which is what gives this Ekadashi its particular character.
