Frequently asked questions about Shri Baba Balak Nath Aarti

Who is Baba Balak Nath?

A siddha of the Nath tradition worshipped at Deotsidh in Hamirpur, Himachal - held to be ever-young, which is what balak means, and given immortality after hearing the amar katha. The aarti names him Kaladhari and Paunahari, the one who lives on air.

When is the aarti sung?

On Sundays, which are his day at Deotsidh, and through the Chaitra mela. Devotee households in Himachal, Punjab and Haryana sing it at the evening lamp and at jagratas held for a vow completed.

What is offered to him?

Rot - a thick sweet wheat roti made in ghee - with milk, and a ghee lamp. The rot is his characteristic prasad, prepared at home and carried to the shrine or shared after the aarti.

Why are women not admitted to the inner cave?

The shrine keeps that custom on the basis of his lifelong brahmacharya, and women offer darshan and their prayers from the terrace below. It is a local temple practice, not a rule about who may sing the aarti - at home there is no restriction at all.

What do the jholi and chimta stand for?

The begging bag and tongs of a Nath yogi, along with the singi horn, the rudraksha mala and the deerskin seat the aarti describes. They mark him as a renunciate rather than a householder deity, and his worship keeps that plainness. This page is the lamp-song; forty-verse hymns are on the Chalisa index, and compact japa formulas sit under Mantra.
