Frequently asked questions about Tamil Panchangam
What is the difference between Vakya and Thirukanitha?
Two computational traditions. Thirukanitha uses modern astronomical positions; the older Vakya panchangams use traditional mnemonic tables and can differ by a day on a tithi or a nakshatra. This page follows Thirukanitha, so a Vakya almanac may not always agree.
Which months and year does it use?
The twelve Tamil solar months - Chithirai through Panguni - each beginning when the Sun enters a sidereal sign, with the Thiruvalluvar Aandu as the year. Month lengths run from twenty-nine to thirty-two days.
Why can a month begin a day later than the ingress?
Because the Tamil rule uses sunset: if the Sankranti falls after sunset, the month starts the next day. Kerala uses an afternoon cutoff and Bengal the following day, which is why the same ingress opens these months on different dates.
Which days does a Tamil household look for?
Pongal in Thai, Puthandu on Chithirai 1, Aadi Perukku and the Aadi Fridays, Aavani Avittam, the Purattasi Saturdays, Karthikai Deepam, Margazhi with Thiruvathirai and Vaikunta Ekadashi, and Thai Pusam. The Tamil calendar lists them by month.
Does it show the day's Rahu Kalam?
Not in the yearly grid itself. Rahu Kalam, Yamagandam and Kuligai are on the daily Panchang for the city you set. The eight Gowri Nalla Neram windows of the day and the night are on the Gowri Panchang, the South Indian daily almanac.
