What does a Vishnu puja need?
The common essentials plus what is specific to Narayana: tulsi leaves with manjari, yellow flowers, yellow cloth, yellow sandalwood, a Saligram if the house has one, yellow sweets and banana. Yellow runs through the whole offering.
Why is tulsi indispensable?
Because his worship is held to be incomplete without it. A single tulsi leaf offered with devotion is said to outweigh elaborate offerings made without one, and the naivedya is offered with a tulsi leaf placed on it.
How should tulsi be plucked?
With care, and not at any time. Custom holds that tulsi is not plucked on Ekadashi or Dwadashi, not after sunset, not on Sunday, and never with the nails - the leaves are taken gently with the fingers after a bath, and for an Ekadashi puja they are gathered the previous day.
Which vessels should be used?
Copper, brass, silver or clay. Iron and steel are traditionally kept out of the puja vessels, and copper is not used for offering milk or curd in some traditions - a brass or silver bowl covers most needs.
When is Vishnu puja done?
Thursday is his weekday, and Ekadashi - twice a month - is his tithi, along with Purnima for the Satyanarayan vrat. The Ekadashi calendar gives the dates for the year.
