Muhurat times are shown in your local time (computed for New Delhi). The auspicious window shifts a little with your exact location, so treat the times as a close guide and confirm the exact muhurat with your family priest. Dates follow the standard Indian (sunrise) calendar. These dates are selected by Panchang Shuddhi - matching the auspicious nakshatra, tithi and weekday prescribed for this ceremony - and the window shows when that nakshatra prevails during the day.
Frequently asked questions about Namakarana
When is the naming ceremony held?
Classically on the eleventh or twelfth day after birth, and where that is not practical on the hundred-and-first day or the first birthday. Many families now keep it in the first month, on whichever listed day suits.
How are these dates computed?
From the Panchang-Shuddhi rules applied to our own panchang: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, a daytime window, the Moon in Rohini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, the three Uttaras, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Anuradha, Shravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Revati or Ashwini, and a tithi clear of the Rikta days.
Should the name follow the birth nakshatra?
That is the tradition - the first syllable is taken from the pada of the Moon\'s nakshatra at birth. The baby name calculator gives the permitted syllables, and the Janma Nakshatra page the nakshatra itself.
Are there dates all year?
Yes. Namakarana is not held back by Chaturmas, so the list runs across all twelve months, unlike Mundan and Upanayana.
How far ahead does this list go?
The page always shows this year and the next one. On 1 January the past year drops off and the new year is filled from the Panchang, so you do not wait for a yearly update.
What happens at the ceremony?
A Ganesh and Navagraha puja, the name spoken into the child\'s right ear four times by the father, and the name announced to the gathering. The horoscope is often written out and read on the same day.
About the Namakarana - Naming Ceremony Muhurat
Namakarana is the naming sanskar, usually in the first weeks or months after birth, when the child's name is spoken in a small puja. A muhurat is chosen from supportive nakshatras and tithis so the rite begins on a clean Panchang day. This page lists those dates with the shubh time window, nakshatra and tithi. The dates are computed by Panchang Shuddhi from the site's Lahiri almanac, not copied from a printed panchang page.
The name itself is a separate choice. Many families pick a starting syllable from the Janma Nakshatra pada; others use the Moon sign or a family name. This muhurat list does not suggest names. For syllables and modern name lists, use the Nakshatra baby name generator or Rashi baby names. A naming day does not confer health or fortune, and it is not a medical appointment.
Times are calculated for New Delhi and shown in your local zone. Confirm with your priest - some families name on the 11th or 12th day regardless of the printed muhurat, and a premature or unwell baby should follow the paediatrician, not the calendar. Dates follow the Indian sunrise calendar.
The list is free. You can share it or download a PDF. Nearby rites: Annaprasan (first solid food) and Mundan (first haircut).
A muhurat is a chosen window to begin a ceremony, not a full daily panchang. Today's windows for any work are on My Muhurat Today. The day's tithi, sunrise and Rahu Kalam sit on the Panchang. Browse other ceremonies on the Muhurats index.
