What is on the Krishna puja list?
The common essentials plus tulsi leaves, makhan-mishri, a peacock feather, a flute, yellow pitambar cloth, yellow flowers and a vaijayanti mala, kheer or panjiri, and itra with chandan.
Why makhan-mishri?
Because it is what the child Krishna of Braj is offered - butter with sugar, the food of the stories themselves. It is simple to prepare and is considered dearer to him than an elaborate sweet, and it is offered with a tulsi leaf on top.
Is tulsi necessary here too?
Yes. As with any form of Vishnu, the naivedya is offered with a tulsi leaf and the worship is regarded as incomplete without one. Keep a tulsi plant at home if you do this puja regularly; the leaves are plucked in the morning, never after sunset.
What do the peacock feather and flute stand for?
They are his own emblems - the mor pankh in the crown and the bansuri whose sound called the whole of Braj. Both are kept on the altar rather than offered and consumed, and many households keep a feather in the puja room through the year.
How does this differ from the Janmashtami list?
This is for regular worship of Krishna. The Janmashtami list adds what the birth night needs - the jhula, new clothes and ornaments, the midnight abhishek, dhaniya panjiri and the cucumber for the janma ritual.
