The sixteenth year in the classical reckoning, so around the completed fifteenth birthday. Where the Upanayana was kept late, families sometimes hold the two close together.

How are the dates chosen?

As a kshaura, a shaving rite, it follows the same nakshatras as the Chudakarana - Mrigashira, Ashwini, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Jyeshtha, Shravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha and Revati - on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, in daylight, avoiding the Rikta tithis and Chaturmas.

What is done on the day?

A Ganesh puja and sankalpa, the shave itself, a bath, and in many families a fast or a vow of restraint taken for the day. Gifts are given to the barber and dakshina to the pandit.

Is it still observed?

Less widely than Mundan or Upanayana, and mostly in families that keep the full sixteen sanskars. Where it is kept, the muhurat is treated with the same care as any other samskara.
