Muhurat times are shown in your local time (computed for New Delhi). The auspicious window shifts a little with your exact location, so treat the times as a close guide and confirm the exact muhurat with your family priest. Dates follow the standard Indian (sunrise) calendar. These dates are selected by Panchang Shuddhi - matching the auspicious nakshatra, tithi and weekday prescribed for this ceremony - and the window shows when that nakshatra prevails during the day.

Frequently asked questions about Mundan

At what age is Mundan done?

In an odd year - the first, third or fifth - with the third the most common. Some families keep the seventh. Before the first birthday it is generally avoided unless a family vow requires it.

Why does the list skip August to October?

Because Chudakarana is a samskara and is not performed during Chaturmas, the four months from Devshayani to Devutthana Ekadashi. The dates resume once Devutthana has passed in November.

Which nakshatras are used?

The soft and movable ones the muhurta texts prescribe for a tonsure - Mrigashira, Ashwini, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Jyeshtha, Shravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha and Revati - on a Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, in daylight.

What is done with the hair?

It is offered - placed in a river, buried at a temple, or given at the family\'s kul devta shrine or a tirtha such as Tirupati, Haridwar or Vaishno Devi, depending on the family vow. A small tuft is often left at the crown.

Can it be done at a temple on a temple's own day?

Yes, and that overrides the general list. Where a family has vowed the mundan at a particular shrine, the day the shrine allots is taken as the muhurat. For a home mundan without a shrine date, use the listed windows here; today's tithi sits on the Panchang, the other sanskars on Muhurats, and any-work windows on My Muhurat Today.

About the Mundan - Choula - Chudakarana Muhurat

Mundan (Choula, Chudakarana) is the first ceremonial haircut, often at a temple or on a riverbank, in the first or third year depending on family custom. A muhurat is chosen when the Moon is in a suitable nakshatra for cutting hair and the tithi is allowed. This page lists those dates with the shubh time window, nakshatra and tithi, computed by Panchang Shuddhi from the site's Lahiri almanac.

Hygiene and the child's comfort come first. This calendar is not medical advice. If the scalp is infected, the child is feverish, or a doctor has asked you to wait, wait. Some families keep a shikha (tuft); others shave fully - that is custom, not something this list decides. A shubh nakshatra does not make a blunt blade safe; use a barber or priest who knows the rite.

Times are calculated for New Delhi and shown in your local zone. Confirm with your priest, especially for temple slots at places such as Tirupati or Varanasi that have their own booking rules. Dates follow the Indian sunrise calendar. Nearby childhood rites: Annaprasan and Karnavedha (ear piercing).

The list is free. You can share it or download a PDF. For the day's limbs including Rahu Kalam, use the daily Panchang.

A muhurat is a chosen window to begin a ceremony, not a full daily panchang. Today's windows for any work are on My Muhurat Today. The day's tithi, sunrise and Rahu Kalam sit on the Panchang. Browse other ceremonies on the Muhurats index.
