When is this aarti sung?
Twice daily at the Bhawan in Katra, at dawn and dusk, when the cave is closed for the aarti. At home devotees sing it during Navratri, on Fridays and Tuesdays, and at jagratas held after a completed yatra.
Which goddess is worshipped at the shrine?
Vaishno Devi, present in the holy cave of the Trikuta hills as three pindis - Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati together, not as a carved murti. The aarti names the cave itself, gufa tumhari, as the thing the devotee longs to see again.
What is the Bhairav temple at the top?
The shrine of Bhairon Nath, above the Bhawan, and the yatra is traditionally held incomplete until it is visited - from the account of his pursuit of the Mata and his pardon at the end. His own aarti is on the Bhairon Nath aarti page.
Can the aarti be sung without going to Katra?
Yes, and most who sing it are at home. The devotional understanding is that the bulawa, the call, comes to those the Mata chooses; until then the aarti before a picture and a ghee lamp is her worship in full.
What is offered to her?
