Frequently asked questions about Mangal Chalisa

When is the Mangal Chalisa recited?

On Tuesdays, Mangal's own day, and at Angarki Chaturthi when the Chaturthi falls on a Tuesday. Morning after a bath, before a red flower and a lamp, is the usual time.

What does Mars signify in a chart?

Energy, courage, initiative and conflict; siblings, land and property; blood and muscle in the body. The Chalisa calls him Bhoomi putra, son of the earth, and lord of Mesh and Vrishchik.

Does it help with Mangal dosha?

Mangal upasana, the Tuesday vrat and red daan are among the remedies the tradition gives for an afflicted Mars. Whether the dosha is present, and whether it is cancelled, is a chart matter - check it on the Manglik dosha calculator before assuming either.

What is given in daan for Mars?

Masoor dal, jaggery, copper, red cloth and a red flower, on a Tuesday. Hanuman worship is the other remedy the tradition names, since he is held to govern Mangal's fierceness - see the Hanuman Chalisa.

Is Mars a malefic to be feared?

Mars is a natural malefic but not an enemy - the same energy that damages when unchecked is what carries any hard work through. Classical texts treat him as strength wrongly aimed rather than as harm, and the Chalisa asks for the aim, not the strength.

About the Mangal Chalisa

The Mangal Chalisa - the forty-verse hymn to Mangal Dev (Mars, Bhauma), recited for courage, energy and relief from the effects of Mangal dosha.

A chalisa is a devotional hymn of forty (chalis) verses (chaupais), framed by opening and closing dohas (couplets). The Mangal Chalisa above is given in both Hindi (Devanagari) and English (Hinglish, Roman script) so you can read it in whichever script you are most comfortable with - switch between the two using the buttons above. It is traditionally recited with devotion, often after a bath and before the deity, especially on the day associated with the deity.

A chalisa is forty verses. It is not the short lamp-song (that is an aarti) and not a longer Sanskrit stotram. Other forty-verse hymns are on the Chalisa index. For japa of a compact formula use a mantra. If you are keeping a fast, the story is under Vrat Katha.
