Bhima sochte - "Daan-yagya to kar sakta hoon, par bhookh ke aage upvaas mere bas ki baat nahi. Phir mujhe Ekadashi ka punya kaise milega aur main paap se kaise bachoonga?" Apni yeh vyatha lekar ve apne pitaamah-tulya Maharshi Vedvyaas ke paas gaye aur upaay poocha.

Vyas ji muskuraaye aur bole - "He Bhimsen, yadi tum varsh bhar ki chaubeeson Ekadashiyon ka upvaas nahi kar sakte, to keval ek vrat karo - Jyeshtha maas ke Shukla paksha ki Nirjala Ekadashi. Is din sooryoday se agle din dwadashi tak bina ann aur bina jal (nirjala) rahkar Bhagwan Vishnu ki aaradhana karo. Iske punya se tumhe varsh ki saari Ekadashiyon ka phal ek saath mil jaayega."

Bhima ne yeh atyant kathin vrat sweekar kiya. Bina jal ke poora din-raat upvaas karna unke liye saadhaaran baat na thi - vrat ke ant mein ve murchhit-se ho gaye, par unhone niyam na toda. Is kathin vrat ko poora karne ke kaaran ise Bhimseni Ekadashi bhi kaha jaata hai. Bhagwan Vishnu prasann hue aur Bhima ko chaubeeson Ekadashiyon ka punya prapt hua.

पाँच पांडवों में भीमसेन अत्यंत बलशाली और वीर थे, पर उन्हें भोजन बहुत प्रिय था - बिना खाए वे रह ही नहीं पाते थे। माता कुंती, युधिष्ठिर, अर्जुन, द्रौपदी और बाकी सब हर मास दोनों एकादशियों का व्रत श्रद्धा से रखते थे, पर भीम अपनी भूख के कारण एक भी एकादशी का उपवास न कर पाते थे। इससे उनके मन में दुख और ग्लानि रहती थी।

भीम सोचते - "दान-यज्ञ तो कर सकता हूँ, पर भूख के आगे उपवास मेरे बस की बात नहीं। फिर मुझे एकादशी का पुण्य कैसे मिलेगा और मैं पाप से कैसे बचूँगा?" अपनी यह व्यथा लेकर वे अपने पितामह-तुल्य महर्षि वेदव्यास के पास गए और उपाय पूछा।

व्यास जी मुस्कुराए और बोले - "हे भीमसेन, यदि तुम वर्ष भर की चौबीसों एकादशियों का उपवास नहीं कर सकते, तो केवल एक व्रत करो - ज्येष्ठ मास के शुक्ल पक्ष की निर्जला एकादशी। इस दिन सूर्योदय से अगले दिन द्वादशी तक बिना अन्न और बिना जल (निर्जला) रहकर भगवान विष्णु की आराधना करो। इसके पुण्य से तुम्हें वर्ष की सारी एकादशियों का फल एक साथ मिल जाएगा।"

भीम ने यह अत्यंत कठिन व्रत स्वीकार किया। बिना जल के पूरा दिन-रात उपवास करना उनके लिए साधारण बात न थी - व्रत के अंत में वे मूर्छित-से हो गए, पर उन्होंने नियम न तोड़ा। इस कठिन व्रत को पूरा करने के कारण इसे भीमसेनी एकादशी भी कहा जाता है। भगवान विष्णु प्रसन्न हुए और भीम को चौबीसों एकादशियों का पुण्य प्राप्त हुआ।

शिक्षा: निर्जला एकादशी सिखाती है कि दृढ़ संकल्प, संयम और श्रद्धा से किया गया एक ही व्रत सम्पूर्ण वर्ष के पुण्य के बराबर फल दे सकता है। यह वर्ष की सबसे कठिन और सबसे फलदायी एकादशी मानी जाती है।

What makes Nirjala Ekadashi different?

No water. It falls on the Ekadashi of Jyeshtha Shukla Paksha, in the hottest part of the year, and is kept without food or water from sunrise until the Dwadashi paran. It is the hardest fast in the Ekadashi cycle and is also called Bhimseni Ekadashi.

Why does it carry the merit of all the Ekadashis?

Because of the answer Vyasa gave Bhima. Bhima could not fast at all for his appetite, and Vyasa told him to keep this one Ekadashi waterless and he would receive the fruit of all twenty-four. It is offered as the one fast for those who cannot keep the rest.

Should everyone attempt the waterless fast?

No, and this is worth saying plainly. Jyeshtha is peak summer, and a waterless fast in that heat is unsafe for children, the elderly, pregnant women, anyone unwell and anyone on medication. Keeping it with water, or as a fruit fast, is entirely accepted - the tradition never asks anyone to harm the body.

What is given as daan on this day?

Water above all - pots of water, sherbet, chhaach, fans, umbrellas and slippers, along with food and clothing. Setting up a water stall is the classic act of merit on this Ekadashi, and it fits the day exactly: those who go without water give it to others.

What is the story of Bhima teaching?

That resolve counts for more than routine. Bhima was the one Pandava who could not keep the fasts, and he nearly collapsed completing this single one - but he did not break the rule. The tradition holds up that one act of firmness as equal to a year of easier observance.
