About Vrat Food
Vrat food is the special fasting cuisine of Hindu observances — dishes prepared without grains, lentils, onion or garlic, using ingredients the tradition counts as phalahar ("fruit food"): sabudana (sago), kuttu (buckwheat), singhara (water chestnut flour), rajgira (amaranth), samak (barnyard millet), potatoes, fruits, nuts, dairy and rock salt (sendha namak).
Every recipe on this page is written for fasting days — Ekadashi, Navratri, Maha Shivratri, Karwa Chauth, Janmashtami, purnima and weekly vrats — with simple step-by-step methods. Which ingredients are permitted varies by region, family tradition and the strictness of the fast (Ekadashi, for example, excludes even some phalahar items in many households), so adjust to your own practice.
