Why is this the best-known Durga aarti?
Because it is the one sung at the end of Durga Puja and Navratri worship almost everywhere in northern and western India, and at the close of a Durga Saptashati path. Its metre is easy and every verse is a picture, so it is learnt in childhood and never forgotten.
Who are Ambe and Gauri here?
Two names of the same goddess - Ambe the mother, Gauri the fair one, Parvati. The first verse says Hari, Brahma and Shiva all meditate on her day and night, placing her above the three gods rather than beside them.
What do the weapons in her hands stand for?
The khadg and khappar of the fourth verse - the sword that cuts through ignorance and the bowl that receives what has been cut away. The lion she rides is the tamed force of anger and desire, carrying her rather than driving her.
When in the puja does the aarti come?
Last, after the naivedya. On the nine nights it is sung at the evening lamp; on Ashtami and Navami it follows the kanya pujan and the halwa-puri bhog, and then the prasad is given out.
Is the Chandi Path needed before it?
No. The Chandi aarti and the Saptashati recital belong to a fuller ritual observance; this aarti alone, with a lamp and flowers, is a complete household worship of the Devi.
