Ek nagar mein ek vriddh Brahmani rehti thi. Woh Bhagwan Vishnu ki badi bhakt thi - vrat, upvaas aur pooja-paath niyam se karti thi. Par uske svabhaav mein ek bada dosh tha: woh atyant kanjoos thi aur kisi ko daan ya anna kabhi nahi deti thi. Devta aur Brahman bhookhe lautt jaate, par uska haath kabhi daan ke liye na uthtaa.

Uski bhakti se prasann hokar bhi Bhagwan Vishnu uske is dosh ko sudhaarna chaahte the. Ve ek durbal bhikshuk (saadhu) ka roop dharkar uske dwaar par aaye aur bhiksha maangi. Brahmani ne anna ke badle uske bhiksha-paatra mein ek mitti ka dhela rakh diya. Saadhu-roopi Bhagwan muskuraate hue chale gaye.

Mrityu ke baad jab Brahmani devlok pahunchi, to use sundar bhavan to mila, par uska ann-bhandaar sada khaali rehta - bhookh mitti hi na.

Frequently asked questions about Shattila Ekadashi Vrat Katha

What are the six uses of til?

They give the vrat its name - shat-tila, six sesames. Til is mixed into the bathing water, used as an ubtan on the body, offered in the havan, given in tarpana water, eaten in the day's food, and given away as daan. All six on the same day is the full observance.

When does it fall?

On the Ekadashi of Magha Krishna Paksha, in the cold of January or February - the season in which til and gud are eaten anyway, which is part of why the two are joined in this vrat.

Why did the granary stay empty?

Because she had never given anything away. She kept every fast and puja faithfully, but turned away every person who came to her door, once putting a lump of clay into a mendicant's bowl. In the next world she was given a fine house whose granary stayed empty - the exact shape of what she had done.

What is the vrat teaching?

That devotion without generosity does not fill anything. The remedy she was given was not more worship but daan, and the store filled once she gave. It is the clearest statement in the Ekadashi cycle that charity is part of the fast and not an optional addition.

What should be given as daan?

Til above all, along with food, warm clothing and a water pot, given to a Brahmin or to anyone in need. The tradition asks that it be given according to your means and without display - the merit is in the giving, not the amount. This page is the katha of that giving; the fast rules are on the Ekadashi vrat vidhi, the packing list on Puja Samagri, and the previous Pausha fast on the Saphala Ekadashi Vrat Katha.
