What is this aarti for?
Graha shanti - the peace of all nine planets at once. Each verse takes one graha in turn, Surya through Ketu, so a single singing salutes the whole navagraha mandala rather than one planet's shrine.
When is it sung?
At the navagraha shrine of a temple, after a graha shanti puja or havan, at the start of a new venture, and on Amavasya. Some households sing it daily instead of tracking which planet's day it is.
Do I need to know my chart to sing it?
No, and that is its use - it addresses all nine, so nothing is missed. If you want to know which graha is actually pressing in your case, the Mahadasha and transit tools will tell you, and targeted worship can follow.
In what order are the nine worshipped?
Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Budh, Guru, Shukra, Shani, Rahu, Ketu - the order the aarti keeps and the order of the navagraha panel in temples. Rahu and Ketu come last as the shadow planets, without bodies of their own.
Is a havan needed for graha shanti?
A full graha shanti with a havan, samidha for each planet and japa counts is a priest's work and is undertaken for a serious affliction. This aarti with a ghee lamp is the household form, and the tradition does not treat it as a lesser thing.
