The Khatu Shyam Chalisa - the forty-verse hymn to Shyam Baba of Khatu (Barbarik), worshipped as the Kaliyug avatar of Shri Krishna.

Frequently asked questions about Khatu Shyam Chalisa

Who is Khatu Shyam Ji?

Barbarik - grandson of Bhima, son of Morvi, holder of the three arrows - who gave his head before the Mahabharata war and received from Krishna his own name Shyam and worship through the Kaliyug. His shrine is at Khatu in Sikar, Rajasthan.

Why is he called Haare ka Sahara?

Support of the losing side, from the boon that he would stand with whoever was weaker. That is the whole devotional appeal: people come to him at a low point rather than at a high one.

When is the Chalisa recited?

On Ekadashi and Dwadashi, which are his days, and during the Phalgun Mela at Khatu, the largest gathering of the year. Devotees also read it at bhajan sandhyas held after a vow is fulfilled.

What is offered to him?

Churma, kheer, modak and itra, a nishan flag and kesariya cloth. Carrying the nishan on foot to Khatu is the characteristic offering of this tradition rather than anything bought at the shrine.

Is he worshipped as Krishna?

Yes - devotees address him as Shyam because the name was given by Krishna himself, and the darshan is taken as Krishna's. The Mahabharata figure and the deity are held together rather than distinguished. This page is the forty-verse Chalisa; the lamp-song is the Khatu Shyam aarti, and compact japa formulas sit under Mantra.

About the Khatu Shyam Chalisa

The Khatu Shyam Chalisa - the forty-verse hymn to Shyam Baba of Khatu (Barbarik), worshipped as the Kaliyug avatar of Shri Krishna.

A chalisa is a devotional hymn of forty (chalis) verses (chaupais), framed by opening and closing dohas (couplets). The Khatu Shyam Chalisa above is given in both Hindi (Devanagari) and English (Hinglish, Roman script) so you can read it in whichever script you are most comfortable with - switch between the two using the buttons above. It is traditionally recited with devotion, often after a bath and before the deity, especially on the day associated with the deity.

A chalisa is forty verses. It is not the short lamp-song (that is an aarti) and not a longer Sanskrit stotram. Other forty-verse hymns are on the Chalisa index. For japa of a compact formula use a mantra. If you are keeping a fast, the story is under Vrat Katha.
