বার বার মিথ্যা দোষ আর মার সহ্যে বেরাল দুঃখ পেলো। শেষে সে মা ষষ্ঠীর কাছে গিয়ে বউয়ের মিথ্যা ব্যবহারের নালিশ করলো। মা ষষ্ঠী সেই বউয়ের উপরে রেগে গেলেন।
এর ফলে, যখনই সেই বউয়ের সন্তান জন্ম নিতো, বেরাল রাতে এসে তাকে তুলে মা ষষ্ঠীর কাছে নিয়ে যেতো, আর এই ভাবে তার কোনো সন্তানই বেঁচে থাকতো না। এক-এক করে সব সন্তান হারানোয় বউ শোকে ও অনুতাপে ভেঙে পড়লো। জ্ঞানী মেয়েদের জিজ্ঞেস করলে সে নিজের ভুল আর মিথ্যার দোষ বুঝতে পারলো।
বউ সত্যি মনে নিজের ভুল স্বীকার করলো, বেরাল ও মা ষষ্ঠীর কাছে ক্ষমা চাইলো, আর শ্রদ্ধায় ষষ্ঠী ব্রত রেখে মা ষষ্ঠী ও বেরালের পুজো করলো। মা ষষ্ঠী তার সত্যিকারের অনুতাপে প্রসন্ন হলেন। তাঁর কৃপায় তার সন্তানেরা ফিরে এসে সুস্থ, সুখী ও দীর্ঘায়ু হলো, আর তার ঘর আবার খুশিতে ভরে গেলো।

Why is the cat central to the story?
Because the daughter-in-law ate the household's food in secret and blamed the black cat for it, again and again, and the cat was beaten for what it had not done. It was Maa Shashthi's own mount, and the grief that followed came of that false blame rather than of the eating.
What does the katha teach?
Truthfulness and kindness to animals, plainly. The turn comes when the woman admits her fault and asks forgiveness of the cat as well as the Goddess - only then are her children restored. Blaming the blameless is treated as the real transgression.
