Devraaj Indra ke darbaar mein ek divya sangeet-sabha sajti thi. Us sabha mein Gandharva Malyavan apne madhur gaan ke liye prasiddh tha, aur apsara Pushpavati apne manmohak nritya ke liye. Ek din gaan-nritya ke samay dono ek-doosre ke roop aur prem mein aise leen ho gaye ki sur, taal aur sabha ki maryada - sab bhool gaye.

Devraaj Indra is anaadar se atyant krodhit ho uthhe. Unhone shraap diya - "Tum donon ne meri sabha aur kala ka apmaan kiya hai. Jaao, prithvi par Pishacha (pret) yoni mein girkar dukh bhogo." Shraap-vash dono Himalaya ke ek thande, nirjan van mein ghor pret-jeevan bitaane lage.

Is dukhmay jeevan mein, sanyog se, Magha (Maagh) maas ke Shukla paksha ki Ekadashi aa gayi.

Anjaane mein hua yeh upvaas aur raatri-jagran hi Jaya Ekadashi ka vrat ban gaya. Is vrat ka prabhav itna phaldaayi hua ki agle hi din dono ka pret-roop chhoot gaya aur ve phir se apne divya, sundar Gandharva-apsara roop ko praapt ho gaye. Lajjit aur kritagya hokar dono ne Indra-lok lautkar kshama maangi.

Seekh: Jaya Ekadashi sikhaati hai ki sachha vrat manushya ko neech yoni aur paap-bandhanon se mukti dilaakar shubh gati pradaan karta hai. Anjaane mein bhi shraddha aur sanyam se kiya vrat aatma ka uddhaar kar deta hai.

Frequently asked questions about Jaya Ekadashi Vrat Katha

When is Jaya Ekadashi?

On the Ekadashi of Magha Shukla Paksha, in January or February. It is kept for release from lower births and from the bondage of past wrongdoing, which is the burden the katha's two characters carry.

What happened to Malyavan and Pushpavati?

The gandharva singer and the apsara dancer became so absorbed in each other during a performance in Indra's court that they lost the beat and the decorum of the assembly. Indra cursed them to fall to earth as pishachas, and they suffered cold, hunger and revulsion in a desolate Himalayan forest.

How were they freed?

Without intending it. On Magha Shukla Ekadashi they were too weak and wretched to eat anything, and the cold kept them awake all night under a tree - a fast and a vigil kept by circumstance. The next day the pishacha form left them and their divine forms returned.

Why is the night vigil part of every Ekadashi?

Because the vrat is understood as a whole day and night given to Vishnu, and jagran with kirtan and his names is how the night is kept. Both this katha and Jaya's own resolution turn on the vigil. Where a whole night is not possible, worship in the evening and again at dawn is accepted.

What is the lesson?

That the fast reaches even those who have fallen furthest, and that its merit does not depend on being deserved. It is also a quiet warning about carelessness in the presence of what deserves respect - the fault that started their fall was inattention, not malice. This page is the story; the how-to is the Ekadashi vrat vidhi, the packing list is Puja Samagri, and Rama's own fast is the Vijaya Ekadashi Vrat Katha.
