Praacheen kaal mein Champak nagar par Vaikhanasa naam ke ek dharmik aur prajaa-vatsal raaja raaj karte the. Unke raaj mein praja sukhi thi aur Brahmano ka aadar hota tha. Ek raat raaja ne swapna mein apne divangat pita ko narak mein ghor kasht bhogte hue dekha. Pita ne unse uddhaar ki praarthana ki.
Is swapna se raaja atyant vyaakul ho uthhe. Subah unhone yeh swapna apne darbaar ke vidvaan Brahmano aur jyotishiyon ko sunaaya aur upaay poocha. Brahmano ke kahne par raaja Parvat muni ke aashram pahunche. Apne gyaan-bal se muni ne jaan liya ki raaja ke pita ne poorv janm mein koi paap kiya tha, jiske kaaran ve narak-yaatna bhog rahe hain.
Parvat muni ne kaha - "He raajan, tum Margashirsha (Agahan) Shukla paksha ki Mokshada Ekadashi ka vrat karo aur uska sampoorn punya apne pita ko arpan kar do. Yeh Ekadashi Gita Jayanti ke din padti hai aur moksha pradaan karne waali hai." Raaja ne poore parivaar sahit shraddha se upvaas rakha, raat bhar Bhagwan Vishnu (Damodar) ka jagran-kirtan kiya aur vidhi-poorvak pooja ki.
Vrat ka samast punya jaise hi raaja ne apne pita ke nimitt arpan kiya, vaise hi pita narak ki yaatna se mukt ho gaye. Aakaash se pushp-varsha hui aur pita divya roop dhaaran karke, raaja ko aashirvaad dete hue, swarg-lok ko prasthaan kar gaye.

प्राचीन काल में चंपक नगर पर वैखानस नाम के एक धार्मिक और प्रजा-वत्सल राजा राज करते थे। उनके राज में प्रजा सुखी थी और ब्राह्मणों का आदर होता था। एक रात राजा ने स्वप्न में अपने दिवंगत पिता को नरक में घोर कष्ट भोगते हुए देखा। पिता ने उनसे उद्धार की प्रार्थना की।
इस स्वप्न से राजा अत्यंत व्याकुल हो उठे। सुबह उन्होंने यह स्वप्न अपने दरबार के विद्वान ब्राह्मणों और ज्योतिषियों को सुनाया और उपाय पूछा। ब्राह्मणों के कहने पर राजा पर्वत मुनि के आश्रम पहुँचे। अपने ज्ञान-बल से मुनि ने जान लिया कि राजा के पिता ने पूर्व जन्म में कोई पाप किया था, जिसके कारण वे नरक-यातना भोग रहे हैं।
पर्वत मुनि ने कहा - "हे राजन, तुम मार्गशीर्ष (अगहन) शुक्ल पक्ष की मोक्षदा एकादशी का व्रत करो और उसका सम्पूर्ण पुण्य अपने पिता को अर्पण कर दो। यह एकादशी गीता जयंती के दिन पड़ती है और मोक्ष प्रदान करने वाली है।" राजा ने पूरे परिवार सहित श्रद्धा से उपवास रखा, रात भर भगवान विष्णु (दामोदर) का जागरण-कीर्तन किया और विधिपूर्वक पूजा की।
व्रत का समस्त पुण्य जैसे ही राजा ने अपने पिता के निमित्त अर्पण किया, वैसे ही पिता नरक की यातना से मुक्त हो गए। आकाश से पुष्प-वर्षा हुई और पिता दिव्य रूप धारण करके, राजा को आशीर्वाद देते हुए, स्वर्ग-लोक को प्रस्थान कर गए।
शिक्षा: मोक्षदा एकादशी का व्रत न केवल स्वयं के, बल्कि अपने पूर्वजों के उद्धार का भी मार्ग है। सच्ची श्रद्धा से किया गया पुण्य दूसरों तक भी पहुँचता है - यही इस व्रत का दिव्य संदेश है।
