What is on this samagri list?
Two sections. The common essentials that any deity puja needs - chowki, kalash, roli, akshat, chandan, flowers, dhoop, diya, camphor, coconut, fruit, panchamrit, naivedya and dakshina - and then the items specific to Shri Ganesha, chiefly durva, sindoor, red flowers and modak.
Why is durva grass so important?
It is the offering Ganesha is said to love above all others, and it is traditionally given as twenty-one blades, tied in threes. A Ganesha puja without durva is considered incomplete in a way that no other missing item makes it - so if you buy only one special item, buy this.
Is tulsi offered to Ganesha?
No. This is the one firm prohibition in a Ganesha puja - tulsi is not offered to him, and the Ganesha Purana gives the story behind it. Tulsi belongs to Vishnu and Krishna worship; for Ganpati use durva, red flowers and hibiscus instead.
What if I cannot get some of the items?
Do the puja anyway. The tradition is explicit that water, a flower, akshat and a sincere sankalpa are enough where more is not available, and substitutes are accepted - marigold for hibiscus, a laddu for modak, a picture in place of an idol. Missing an item is not a fault; skipping the puja over it is the greater loss.
What should I read during the puja?
