What is on this list?
The common essentials plus the Devi-specific items: a red chunari, hibiscus and lotus, the sixteen sringar articles, sindoor, an akhand jyot, a coconut wrapped in red cloth, bel patra, red bangles and the bhog of halwa, puri and chana.
What is the sringar offering?
The sixteen articles of adornment offered to the Mother as one would to an honoured woman of the house - bindi, sindoor, bangles, mehndi, kajal, comb, mirror, ribbon, perfume and the rest. It is offered with the chunari and often given afterwards to a married woman or to the temple.
What is the akhand jyot?
A lamp kept burning without a break for the duration of the puja or the nine days of Navratri. It needs a wide clay or brass lamp, ghee or sesame oil, a thick cotton wick and someone to top it up - do not begin one unless the household can watch it, since letting it go out midway is considered a lapse.
Which flowers does the Devi accept?
Red flowers above all, with hibiscus the most favoured, and lotus for the great occasions. Bel patra is offered to her as well, which is unusual for a goddess. White flowers are generally kept for Shiva and Saraswati.
How does this differ from the Navratri list?
