What is Bhumi Pujan for?

The ground-breaking - the worship of the earth and of Vastu Purusha before digging begins and the foundation stone is laid. It is done once, at the start of construction, and is distinct from the Griha Pravesh at the end of it.

How are the dates chosen?

Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, a daytime window, the Moon in Rohini, Mrigashira, the three Uttaras, Hasta, Pushya, Chitra, Swati, Anuradha, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha or Revati, and a tithi clear of the Rikta days. Chaturmas is left out.

What about the Naga Shayan direction?

Many pandits also check where the serpent is said to lie in that season and begin the digging at the corner it does not occupy - the north-east is the usual starting point. That is decided on site and does not change the date.

What is done on the day?

A Ganesh and Vastu puja at the plot, a kalash with a coin, a silver naga and turmeric placed in the first pit at the north-east, the first digging by the owner, and often a Navagraha havan. Then work begins.

How far ahead does this list go?

The page always shows this year and the next one. On 1 January the past year drops off and the new year is filled from the Panchang, so you do not wait for a yearly update.

Do I need a second muhurat for moving in?

Yes - Bhumi Pujan times the start of building, and the Griha Pravesh muhurat times the entry once it is done. They are separate rites with different rules.

About the Bhumi Pujan Muhurat

Bhumi Pujan (Bhoomi Pujan) is the ground-breaking rite before a foundation is laid - offerings to the land, Vastu Purusha and often Ganesha, so construction begins with a clean start. A muhurat is chosen when the Panchang supports digging and a new structure: suitable nakshatra, tithi and weekday. This page lists those dates with the shubh time window, nakshatra and tithi, computed by Panchang Shuddhi from the site's Lahiri data.

A muhurat is not a building permit, a soil test, or a structural drawing. It does not replace an engineer, a contractor, or the municipal rules. Pouring concrete on a shubh tithi does not make an unsafe design safe. Buying the plot is a different list: property purchase muhurat. Moving into the finished house is Griha Pravesh.

Times are calculated for New Delhi and shown in your local zone. Confirm with your priest and with the construction schedule - labour and concrete often decide the hour more than the lagna. Dates follow the Indian sunrise calendar. The daily Panchang shows Rahu Kalam if you want to keep the first spade outside it.
