Sita-haran ke baad, Bhagwan Shri Rama vaanar-sena ke saath Ravana ka vadh karne aur Maata Sita ko mukt karaane Lanka ki ore badhe. Par jab vishaal sena samudra ke tat par pahunchi, to apaar, garjta sagar ne unka maarg rok liya. Saagar ko paar kiye bina Lanka tak pahunchna asambhav tha. Shri Rama vichaar mein pad gaye.

Lakshman ji ke paraamarsh par Shri Rama paas hi tapasya kar rahe muni Bakdalbhya (Vakdalbhya) ke aashram pahunche aur samudra paar karne ka upaay poocha. Muni ne kaha - "He Raghunandan, aap Phalguna maas ke Krishna paksha ki Vijaya Ekadashi ka vrat keejiye. Yeh vrat naam ke anuroop nishchit vijay pradaan karta hai. Iske prabhav se aapka maarg avashya khulega."

Muni ke aadesh anusaar Shri Rama ne apne sampoorn sena-naayakon - Sugreev, Angad, Hanuman, Jambvant aadi - ke saath vidhi-poorvak Vijaya Ekadashi ka vrat rakha. Kalash sthaapit karke, Bhagwan Vishnu ki pooja aur raatri-jagran kiya gaya, aur sab ne sankalp ke saath upvaas kiya.

Vrat ke punya-prabhav se samudra-dev shaant hue aur setu (Ram Setu) nirmaan ka maarg khul gaya. Nal-Neel ke netritva mein vaanar-sena ne pul banaaya, sena ne sagar paar kiya aur ghor sangraam mein Shri Rama ne Ravana ka sanhaar karke Sita ji ko mukt karaaya aur vijay praapt ki.

Seekh: Vijaya Ekadashi sikhaati hai ki kathin se kathin baadha aur shatru bhi shraddha, dhairya aur drid sankalp ke saath kiye gaye vrat se paar ho jaate hain. Yeh vrat har kaarya mein vijay aur safalta pradaan karta hai.

सीता-हरण के बाद, भगवान श्री राम वानर-सेना के साथ रावण का वध करने और माता सीता को मुक्त कराने लंका की ओर बढ़े। पर जब विशाल सेना समुद्र के तट पर पहुँची, तो अपार, गरजता सागर ने उनका मार्ग रोक लिया। सागर को पार किए बिना लंका तक पहुँचना असंभव था। श्री राम विचार में पड़ गए।

लक्ष्मण जी के परामर्श पर श्री राम पास ही तपस्या कर रहे मुनि बकदाल्भ्य (वकदाल्भ्य) के आश्रम पहुँचे और समुद्र पार करने का उपाय पूछा। मुनि ने कहा - "हे रघुनंदन, आप फाल्गुन मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की विजया एकादशी का व्रत कीजिए। यह व्रत नाम के अनुरूप निश्चित विजय प्रदान करता है। इसके प्रभाव से आपका मार्ग अवश्य खुलेगा।"

मुनि के आदेश अनुसार श्री राम ने अपने सम्पूर्ण सेना-नायकों - सुग्रीव, अंगद, हनुमान, जाम्बवंत आदि - के साथ विधिपूर्वक विजया एकादशी का व्रत रखा। कलश स्थापित करके, भगवान विष्णु की पूजा और रात्रि-जागरण किया गया, और सबने संकल्प के साथ उपवास किया।

व्रत के पुण्य-प्रभाव से समुद्र-देव शांत हुए और सेतु (राम सेतु) निर्माण का मार्ग खुल गया। नल-नील के नेतृत्व में वानर-सेना ने पुल बनाया, सेना ने सागर पार किया और घोर संग्राम में श्री राम ने रावण का संहार करके सीता जी को मुक्त कराया और विजय प्राप्त की।

शिक्षा: विजया एकादशी सिखाती है कि कठिन से कठिन बाधा और शत्रु भी श्रद्धा, धैर्य और दृढ़ संकल्प के साथ किए गए व्रत से पार हो जाते हैं। यह व्रत हर कार्य में विजय और सफलता प्रदान करता है।

Did Rama himself keep this fast?

That is the katha. With the vanara army halted at the shore and no way across to Lanka, the sage Bakdalbhya told Rama to keep the Vijaya Ekadashi fast, saying it grants victory as its name promises. Rama kept it with Sugriva, Angada, Hanuman and Jambavan.

What happened after the vrat?

The sea grew calm and the way opened for the setu. Nala and Nila led the building of the bridge, the army crossed, and Rama defeated Ravana and freed Sita. The tradition reads the calming of the ocean as the fruit of the fast rather than as a separate miracle.

How is the puja done?

With a kalash established and worshipped, Vishnu's image placed on it, and the night spent in jagran, exactly as the army did in the story. Keeping this vrat before beginning something difficult - a case, an examination, a venture - follows the same pattern.

Not an easy path but a passable one. Even Rama faced an obstacle he could not simply overcome, and the fast is offered as what steadies resolve and opens a way through.
