When is this aarti sung?
At the very close of the Satyanarayan puja, after the katha has been read and the sava-measure panjiri offered. It is the last act before the prasad is distributed, so the whole gathering stands and sings it together.
Who is Satyanarayan?
Vishnu worshipped as satya, truth itself - Lakshmiramana, the beloved of Lakshmi, as the opening line calls him. The vrat is kept for a vow fulfilled or a wish placed, and the aarti names the characters of its katha: the poor brahmin, the woodcutters, the merchant Sadhu and king Chandrachud.
What must be done with the prasad?
It must be taken by everyone present, and this is treated as strict - the katha itself turns on the merchant family that neglected the prasad and lost everything. Nothing is kept back or thrown away; the sava measure is made so that all can share.
Is the katha read before the aarti?

On which day is the puja held?
Purnima is the favoured day, and Thursday after it, but the puja may be held on any auspicious day once a sankalpa is made - which is why it is so often done for a new house, a new business or a wish granted.
