Frequently asked questions about Manasa Devi Panchali

Who is Manasa Devi?

The serpent Goddess, held to have come from Shiva's own mind, which is what the name Manasa means. She is worshipped through the monsoon in Bengal, Bihar, Assam and Odisha for protection from snakebite, and for children, health and prosperity.

When is she worshipped?

Mainly in the rainy months of Shravana and Bhadra, when snakes are most active, with the last day of Shravana kept as the principal Manasa Puja. Households also keep her worship through Bhashan or Bishahari observances in the same season.

What is the Behula and Lakhindar story?

The heart of the panchali. Chand Sadagar, a devoted follower of Shiva, refused to worship Manasa, and lost his sons to snakebite - the youngest, Lakhindar, on his wedding night, inside an iron chamber built to keep snakes out. His bride Behula floated down the rivers on a raft with his body for months, reached the realm of the gods, and won his life back by her steadfastness.

What is the panchali teaching?

The victory of constancy over obstinacy. Behula's courage and truthfulness moved the Goddess where nothing else had, and Chand Sadagar's pride finally yielded - he offered his flowers with the left hand, but he offered them. Even a hard refusal softens before genuine surrender.

How does this page differ from the Monosha Panchali?

This gives the vrat katha of Manasa Devi as read during her worship. The Monosha Panchali page carries the traditional Manasa Mangal panchali text for households that follow the longer Bengali recitation.
