Ek din Hemamali phool lekar lautte samay, patni ke prem aur saundarya mein aise khoya ki Kuber ki pooja ka samay hi bhool gaya. Idhar Kuber Shiv-pooja ke liye phoolon ki prateeksha karte rahe. Bahut der hone par jab Hemamali pahuncha, to Kuber krodh se bhar uthhe. Usse kaaran poochhne par sachchaai jaankar Kuber aur bhi kupit ho gaye aur bole - "Tune kaam-vasana mein lipt hokar prabhu ki pooja ka apmaan kiya hai!"

Krodh mein Kuber ne shraap diya - "Ja, tu kodh (kusht) rog se grast ho jaayega aur apni priya patni se sada ke liye bichhad jaayega." Shraap-vash Hemamali ka sundar shareer kusht-rog se vikrit ho gaya, patni use chhod gayi, aur woh dukhi hokar van-van bhatakne laga, par Shiv-bhakti ke prabhav se use poorv-janm ki smriti bani rahi.

Bhatakte-bhatakte Hemamali Himalaya par sthit Maharishi Markandeya ke aashram pahuncha aur uddhaar ki praarthana ki. Daya-mayi muni ne use Ashadha maas ke Krishna paksha ki Yogini Ekadashi ka vrat batlaaya. Hemamali ne shraddha aur niyam se yeh vrat kiya - uska kusht-rog poori tarah door ho gaya, shareer phir se sundar aur kaantimaan ho gaya, aur use apni patni va sukh phir se prapt hue.

Seekh: Yogini Ekadashi sikhaati hai ki yeh vrat shareer ke rog aur mann ke paap - donon ko door karta hai aur jeevan mein aarogya, saundarya tatha sukh laata hai. Kartavya mein laaparvaahi kasht laati hai, par shraddha-poorn vrat uska nivaaran kar deta hai.

अलकापुरी नगरी के राजा, धन के स्वामी कुबेर, भगवान शिव के परम भक्त थे। वे प्रतिदिन मानसरोवर से आए दिव्य पुष्पों से शिवलिंग की पूजा करते थे। इन फूलों को लाने का काम उनके माली हेमामाली का था, जो एक यक्ष था। हेमामाली अपनी अत्यंत सुंदर पत्नी विशालाक्षी से बेहद प्रेम करता था।

एक दिन हेमामाली फूल लेकर लौटते समय, पत्नी के प्रेम और सौंदर्य में ऐसे खोया कि कुबेर की पूजा का समय ही भूल गया। इधर कुबेर शिव-पूजा के लिए फूलों की प्रतीक्षा करते रहे। बहुत देर होने पर जब हेमामाली पहुँचा, तो कुबेर क्रोध से भर उठे। उससे कारण पूछने पर सच्चाई जानकर कुबेर और भी कुपित हो गए और बोले - "तूने काम-वासना में लिप्त होकर प्रभु की पूजा का अपमान किया है!"

क्रोध में कुबेर ने श्राप दिया - "जा, तू कोढ़ (कुष्ठ) रोग से ग्रस्त हो जाएगा और अपनी प्रिय पत्नी से सदा के लिए बिछड़ जाएगा।" श्राप-वश हेमामाली का सुंदर शरीर कुष्ठ-रोग से विकृत हो गया, पत्नी उसे छोड़ गई, और वह दुखी होकर वन-वन भटकने लगा, पर शिव-भक्ति के प्रभाव से उसे पूर्व-जन्म की स्मृति बनी रही।

भटकते-भटकते हेमामाली हिमालय पर स्थित महर्षि मार्कण्डेय के आश्रम पहुँचा और उद्धार की प्रार्थना की। दया-मयी मुनि ने उसे आषाढ़ मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की योगिनी एकादशी का व्रत बतलाया। हेमामाली ने श्रद्धा और नियम से यह व्रत किया - उसका कुष्ठ-रोग पूरी तरह दूर हो गया, शरीर फिर से सुंदर और कांतिमान हो गया, और उसे अपनी पत्नी व सुख फिर से प्राप्त हुए।

शिक्षा: योगिनी एकादशी सिखाती है कि यह व्रत शरीर के रोग और मन के पाप - दोनों को दूर करता है और जीवन में आरोग्य, सौंदर्य तथा सुख लाता है। कर्तव्य में लापरवाही कष्ट लाती है, पर श्रद्धापूर्ण व्रत उसका निवारण कर देता है।

What happened to Hemamali?

He was Kubera's yaksha gardener, charged with bringing divine flowers from Manasarovar each day for the Shiva puja. Absorbed in his wife Vishalakshi, he forgot the hour, and Kubera cursed him with leprosy and separation from her. He wandered afflicted until he reached the ashram of Markandeya in the Himalaya.

Can the fast be kept for someone who is ill?

Yes, and it is one of the common reasons this particular Ekadashi is kept. A family member keeps the fast, dedicates it in the sankalpa to the person who is unwell, and continues their treatment as normal. The vrat sits alongside medicine in the tradition; it was never meant to replace it.

What is the katha saying about duty?

That neglect of what is entrusted to you has consequences, even when the neglect is innocent. Hemamali was not wicked, only careless with the hour, and the whole affliction followed from that. Recovery came the same way it was lost - through an observance kept exactly.
