When is this aarti sung?
On Vasant Panchami above all, when Saraswati is worshipped in homes, schools and studios, and on Thursdays. Students and musicians also sing it before beginning study or practice, and at the start of an examination season.
What is offered to Maa Saraswati?
Yellow - yellow flowers and cloth, yellow rice or kesar bhat, white sweets and kheer, with a book, pen or instrument placed at her feet to be blessed. The Saraswati puja samagri page has the list.
Why are books and instruments placed before her?
Because she is the presiding deity of vidya and kala, and the tools of learning are treated as her own. On Vasant Panchami many families do not open the books at all that day - they are left at her feet and taken up again the next morning.
What does the aarti ask for?
Not wealth but buddhi and vivek - clear intelligence, discrimination, and the removal of the darkness of ignorance. It is worth noticing while singing: the whole prayer is for a clearer mind rather than an easier life.
Can children sing it?
They are the ones who most often do. Vasant Panchami is the traditional day for a child to write the first letters, with the family singing this aarti - and the Roman text on this page makes it easy for a child to follow.
