आँवला (आमलकी) वृक्ष को भगवान विष्णु अत्यंत प्रिय है। शास्त्रों में कहा गया है कि सृष्टि के आरंभ में ब्रह्मा जी की उत्पत्ति के समय यह पवित्र वृक्ष प्रकट हुआ था, और इसमें विष्णु का वास माना जाता है। इसीलिए फाल्गुन शुक्ल पक्ष की आमलकी एकादशी को आँवला वृक्ष के नीचे बैठकर भगवान विष्णु की पूजा का अत्यंत विशेष महत्व है। यह एकादशी होली से ठीक पहले आती है।

कथा के अनुसार वैदिशा नाम की एक नगरी थी, जहाँ के निवासी धर्मात्मा थे और सभी आमलकी एकादशी का व्रत श्रद्धा से करते थे। उसी नगर का राजा चित्रसेन भी प्रजा सहित यह व्रत नियम से करता था।

एक कथा और प्रचलित है - एक राजा वसुरथ, जिसे बचपन में वन में छोड़ दिया गया था, एक निषाद (व्याध) परिवार में पला। बड़े होकर भी वह धार्मिक और दानवीर राजा बना और आमलकी एकादशी का व्रत नियम से करने लगा। एक बार वन में विश्राम के समय शत्रु-सैनिकों ने सोते हुए राजा पर आक्रमण कर दिया।

उस समय राजा द्वारा किए गए आमलकी एकादशी व्रत के पुण्य से एक दिव्य, तेजस्वी शक्ति प्रकट हुई, जिसने एक-एक करके सब शत्रुओं का संहार कर दिया और राजा की रक्षा की। जब राजा जागा, तो उसे कुछ पता न था - पर आकाशवाणी से ज्ञात हुआ कि यह रक्षा उस व्रत के पुण्य और भगवान विष्णु की कृपा से हुई। राजा की खोई प्रतिष्ठा और राज्य फिर स्थिर हो गया।

शिक्षा: आमलकी एकादशी सिखाती है कि प्रकृति (वृक्ष) का सम्मान और भगवान की भक्ति मिलकर जीवन की रक्षा और उन्नति करती है। विष्णु को प्रिय आँवला की पूजा आरोग्य, सुरक्षा और पुण्य प्रदान करती है।

Why is the amla tree worshipped?

Because the shastras hold that it appeared at the beginning of creation, at the time of Brahma's own origin, and that Vishnu dwells in it. Sitting beneath an amla tree to worship Vishnu on this day is considered especially meritorious.

What if there is no amla tree nearby?

A practical difficulty, and the tradition allows for it. Worship is offered to a tulsi plant instead, or amla fruit is placed before Vishnu's image, offered in the puja and given away as daan. The intent of honouring the tree is what carries, not the tree's presence.

King Vasuratha, abandoned in the forest as a child and raised by a nishada family, grew into a righteous and generous king who kept this fast faithfully. Enemy soldiers attacked him while he slept in the forest, and a radiant power born of his vrat destroyed them all. He learnt of it only from a voice from the sky.
