At what age is the thread ceremony held?

The eighth year in the classical rule, with the eleventh and twelfth also named, counted from conception in some traditions and from birth in others. Families now often keep it any time before marriage.

Which months are favoured?

Uttarayana, the Sun\'s northward half, is preferred, and the list is blank through Chaturmas. That leaves a strong run from Magha to Jyeshtha and a shorter one after Devutthana Ekadashi.

Which nakshatras are permitted here that are not elsewhere?

Upanayana admits a broader set - the gentle nakshatras plus Ardra, Ashlesha, Mula, the three Purvas - because the rite is one of study and initiation rather than of the body. Sunday is also allowed, unlike the other sanskars on this site.

What happens at the ceremony?

The head is shaved, the boy bathes, the yagnopavit of three strands is worn, the Gayatri is given by the father or the acharya, the first bhiksha is taken from the mother, and the homa is performed. It runs a full morning and sometimes two days.

How far ahead does this list go?

Does the boy's own chart matter for the date?

About the Upanayana - Janeu Sacred Thread Muhurat

Upanayana (Janeu, Yagnopavit, the sacred-thread ceremony) is the sanskar that traditionally begins Vedic study, with the wearing of the yajnopavita. A muhurat is chosen from nakshatras and tithis allowed for this rite, often in the years the family's shakha considers proper. This page lists those dates with the shubh time window, nakshatra and tithi, computed by Panchang Shuddhi from the Lahiri almanac.

Who takes Upanayana, at what age, and with which mantras is a matter of family, region and sampradaya. This calendar does not decide eligibility and it is not a religious ruling. It is a date list.
