Frequently asked questions about Devi Chandi Aarti
What is the Chandi of this aarti?
The Devi of the Devi Mahatmya, the seven hundred verses also called the Chandi Path or Durga Saptashati, in which she destroys Mahishasura, Shumbha and Nishumbha. This aarti is made of that text's own famous verses, which is why it is in Sanskrit rather than Hindi.
What do the Ya Devi verses mean?
The Devi who abides in all beings as Vishnumaya, as consciousness, as intelligence - salutations to her, again and again. The threefold repetition is the pattern of the whole hymn: the same goddess found in every faculty of every creature.
When is it sung?
At the close of a Chandi Path or Saptashati recital, at Durga Puja, and during Navratri - most often at the Ashtami and Navami worship. Priests use it to end a Chandi havan.
Is the Saptashati recital needed to sing this?
No. The full path has its own rules of purity, kavacha and argala and a chapter count, and is often done with a priest. This aarti is a household devotional and may be sung on its own before a lamp.
What does Sarvamangalamangalye mean?
Auspiciousness of all that is auspicious, Shive, accomplisher of every purpose, refuge, three-eyed Gauri, Narayani - salutations to you. It is the single most quoted verse of the Saptashati and is used on its own as a daily prayer. This page is the lamp-song; the forty-verse hymn is the Durga Chalisa, the longer Navratri hymn is the Mahishasura Mardini Stotram, and the japa formula is the Navarna mantra.
About the Devi Chandi Aarti
Devi Chandi Aarti - the aarti to Maa Chandi, the fierce form of Durga of the Devi Mahatmya (Chandi Path), sung during Durga Puja and Navratri.
An aarti is a devotional song sung while waving a lit lamp (diya) before the deity, usually at the close of worship. The Devi Chandi Aarti above is given in both Hindi (Devanagari) and English (Hinglish, Roman script) so you can sing along in whichever script you are most comfortable with - switch between the two using the buttons above.
An aarti is the lamp-song at the close of puja. It is not a forty-verse chalisa and not a stotram. Browse every lamp-song on the Aarti index, or open a mantra for the same deity. Where the lamp sits in the sequence of worship is shown in Puja Vidhi.
