Who is Khatu Shyam Ji?
Barbarik, the grandson of Bhima, whose head was given in the Mahabharata and to whom Krishna granted his own name Shyam and worship in the Kaliyug. His temple is at Khatu in Sikar, Rajasthan, and devotees call him the one who gives to the losing side.
Why is he called Haare ka Sahara?
Support of the defeated. The boon was that he would stand with whoever was losing - so his devotees come to him precisely when things have gone wrong, which is why the Khatu shrine draws such crowds of people at a low point.
When is the aarti sung?
At the Phalgun Mela in Khatu, the largest gathering of the year, on Ekadashi and Dwadashi, and at home on any Ekadashi. Devotees sing it at bhajan sandhyas, where his kirtan is the whole evening.
What is offered to him?
Churma, kheer and modak as the aarti itself lists, a nishan flag, itra and a kesariya bagho of saffron cloth. Devotees carrying the nishan on foot to Khatu is the characteristic offering of this tradition.
Is he the same as Krishna?
He is worshipped as Krishna's own name and form given to Barbarik, so devotees address him as Shyam and treat the darshan as Krishna's.
