What is the Panchang?

The word Panchang comes from "pancha" (five) and "anga" (limb): the five limbs of time that the Hindu almanac measures each day. Read together they tell you the character of the day and the favourable and unfavourable windows within it. We compute all five from the sidereal (Lahiri) positions of the Sun and Moon at your local sunrise — which is exactly why the timings change when you switch the city at the top.

The five limbs

  • Tithi — the lunar day, set by the gap between the Moon and the Sun. A new Tithi begins every 12° of separation, so a lunar month holds 30 of them.
  • Nakshatra — the lunar mansion the Moon is passing through (27 in all, each 13°20′ wide).
  • Yoga — a value drawn from the combined longitudes of the Sun and Moon (27 yogas).
  • Karana — half a Tithi; two Karanas fill one lunar day.
  • Vara — the weekday.

Each element shows an "upto" time — the moment it hands over to the next. So "Shukla Dwitiya upto 14:32" means the second day of the waxing Moon runs until 2:32 PM, after which Tritiya starts.

Beyond the five limbs

We also list the timing bands people actually plan around: Abhijit Muhurat (a short, auspicious midday window), the day and night Choghadiya, and the times to avoid such as Rahu Kalam. Lunar month names are given in both the Amanta and Purnimanta systems, and the year appears in the Shaka, Vikram, and Gujarati Samvats.

Use it the simple way: glance at the Tithi and Nakshatra to know the day, then check the Choghadiya or Abhijit before fixing a time for anything important. Planning a wedding or housewarming muhurat is worth confirming with a qualified astrologer.
