What is Choghadiya?

Choghadiya (from chau-ghadi, "four ghadis") is a quick electional-timing system, especially popular in western India, used to pick a good moment for everyday tasks. The day from sunrise to sunset is divided into 8 equal day choghadiya, and sunset to the next sunrise into 8 night choghadiya — 16 muhurat windows in all, each ruled by one of the seven classical planets.

The seven choghadiya

  • Amrit (Moon) — the most auspicious; good for all important work, ceremonies and medicine.
  • Shubh (Jupiter) — auspicious; marriage, religious rites, housewarming, new ventures.
  • Labh (Mercury) — gain; business, trade, education and money matters.
  • Char (Venus) — neutral and movable; ideal for travel, vehicles and movement.
  • Rog (Mars) — inauspicious; illness and conflict — avoid health matters and new starts.
  • Kaal (Saturn) — inauspicious; avoid beginnings, though used for wealth and iron work.
  • Udveg (Sun) — inauspicious; anxiety — suited only to government and official work.

Why the times change with your city

Because each choghadiya is one-eighth of the real daylight (or night) length, the windows stretch in summer and shrink in winter, and they differ from one place to another. The first day choghadiya is always ruled by the lord of the weekday, after which the planets follow a fixed cycle. This page computes everything from your local sunrise and sunset — change the city at the top and every choghadiya shifts to match.

Choghadiya is a fast, everyday guide. For a major decision such as a wedding or housewarming, pair a good choghadiya with a supportive Tithi and Nakshatra and confirm the muhurat with a qualified astrologer. See the Daily Hora and the full Panchang for today for the wider picture.
