Frequently asked questions about Hindu Calendar
Which reckoning does this calendar use?
Vikram Samvat for the year and Amanta months, where each lunar month ends at the new moon. Every day carries its tithi, nakshatra and any festival or vrat falling on it.
What is the difference between Amanta and Purnimanta?
Where the month is taken to end. Amanta, used in the south and west, ends at Amavasya; Purnimanta, used across the north, ends at Purnima. The tithis are identical - only the month name attached to the dark fortnight shifts by one, which is why the same day can be Shravan Krishna in one almanac and Bhadrapada Krishna in another. The Hindi Panchang shows the Purnimanta reckoning.
Why does a festival date differ from my local almanac?
Because a tithi begins and ends at a clock time, not at midnight, and each tradition has its own rule for which day it belongs to - sunrise, madhyahna, pradosh or nishita, depending on the observance. Regional almanacs also differ on the ayanamsha. Where a day matters, check the tithi timing shown rather than the date alone.
What are the five limbs of a Panchang?
Tithi, vara, nakshatra, yoga and karana - five, which is what panchang means. The Janma Panchang calculator gives all five for a birth date and place.
Does it work for my city?
Timings are computed for a place, since sunrise and therefore tithi assignment shift with longitude. Set your city on the Panchang for today's exact figures; the calendar grid gives the dates.
