Why is it called Panchakshari?
Because of the five syllables - na, ma, shi, va, ya - which the tradition maps onto the five elements, earth through space. With Om prefixed it becomes the shadakshari of six syllables; both forms are used.
What does Om Namah Shivaya mean?
Salutations to Shiva - and namah carries the sense of surrender rather than mere greeting. The mantra is not asking for anything, which is why teachers call it the simplest and highest of the Shiva mantras.
How many times should it be chanted?
A mala of a hundred and eight morning and evening is the common practice, and many keep it going silently through the day. Mondays, Pradosh and Shravan are the times when a larger count is undertaken.
Is initiation required?
No. It is the most freely chanted of all Shiva mantras - sung in temples, on pilgrimage and at home by everyone. Formal diksha in a Shaiva sampradaya adds a discipline around it, but does not gate the chanting.
Is it Vedic?

The Five Syllables, One by One
Na is traditionally associated with the earth element, Ma with water, Shi with fire, Va with air and Ya with space - so the five syllables carry the five elements out of which the whole body and world are made. Read as a sentence, "Namah Shivaya" simply means "salutation to Shiva," and since Shiva means "the auspicious one," the mantra is a bow to the auspicious Self that dwells within all. The mantra appears at the heart of Sri Rudram in the Yajurveda ("namah shivaya cha shivataraya cha"), which is why it is honoured as the essence of the entire Rudram.
Without Om it is the five-syllable Panchakshari proper; with Om it becomes the six-syllable Shadakshari. Both forms are used; the plain "Namah Shivaya" is the strictly Vedic seed.
How to Chant
This is the most unrestricted of all the great mantras - tradition holds that anyone may chant it at any time, in any state, aloud, whispered or purely in the mind. For a formal practice, chant 108 repetitions on a rudraksha mala after the morning bath, facing east or north. Mondays, Pradosham (the thirteenth tithi of each fortnight), the month of Shravan and Mahashivratri are the classical high days of Shiva; you can find the Pradosh days of every month on the Pradosh Vrat calendar.
Many devotees pair the japa with a simple offering - a bilva leaf or water on a Shiva linga - but the mantra requires nothing at all: it is complete in itself.

The Panchakshari is often the first mantra given to a child and the constant companion of Shaiva ascetics - it serves every stage of life. It is chanted for steadiness in grief, courage in fear, purification after wrongdoing and simple daily remembrance. In the Shaiva tradition, continuous inward repetition (ajapa-japa), where the mantra runs quietly under all activity, is regarded as its ripest form.
