Frequently asked questions about Jai Shiv Omkara Aarti
Why is Shiva called Omkara here?
Because he is identified with Om itself, the primordial sound from which creation issues. The opening verse then names him Brahma, Vishnu and Sadashiva together - one reality wearing three offices - with Ardhangi dhara, the one who holds half his form as Parvati.
When is this aarti sung?
At the close of any Shiva puja: Mondays, the two monthly Pradosh evenings, the Shravan month, and above all Maha Shivaratri, when it is sung at the end of each of the four night watches. It also follows the abhishek in temples.
What do the counted faces and arms in the verses mean?
One face, four faces, five faces; two arms, four, ten - the aarti is running through the forms Shiva has worn and the mounts of the swan, eagle and bull, to say that every one of them is the same Lord. It is a hymn of ekatva, of oneness behind many shapes.
What is offered while singing it?
Whatever the puja has already used - bel patra, white flowers, bhang, dhatura, milk and water on the linga. The full order, with what Shiva is never offered, is set out in the Shiva puja vidhi.
Is it the same as the Shiv Chalisa?
No. An aarti is the short lamp-song that ends a puja; a chalisa is a forty-verse praise recited in the body of it. Many people read the Shiv Chalisa first and then sing this aarti to close.

Om Jai Shiv Omkara - the beloved aarti to Bhagwan Shiva (Omkara, Mahadev), praising the three-formed Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Sadashiva.
An aarti is a devotional song sung while waving a lit lamp (diya) before the deity, usually at the close of worship. The Jai Shiv Omkara Aarti above is given in both Hindi (Devanagari) and English (Hinglish, Roman script) so you can sing along in whichever script you are most comfortable with - switch between the two using the buttons above.
An aarti is the lamp-song at the close of puja. It is not a forty-verse chalisa and not a stotram. Browse every lamp-song on the Aarti index, or open a mantra for the same deity. Where the lamp sits in the sequence of worship is shown in Puja Vidhi.
