What does a Kali puja need?
The common essentials with the items particular to the Mother in this form: red hibiscus flowers and a hibiscus garland, kajal, mustard oil, urad, black sesame, red sandalwood, sindoor, guggul dhoop, and khichdi or sweets as bhog.
Why red hibiscus?
It is her flower, and the garland of hibiscus is the offering most closely associated with her. The colour is read as the same as her tongue and her ferocity, and no substitute is thought to carry quite the same weight - though marigold is used where hibiscus cannot be found.
Why mustard oil and urad?
A mustard oil lamp is the traditional light for Kali and for Shani, and urad with black til belongs to the same group of dark offerings. They mark a worship kept at night and directed at the removal of fear and obstruction rather than at gain.
When is the puja performed?
At night, and by preference on Amavasya - with Kali Puja on the Diwali Amavasya as the great night of the year. Tuesdays and Saturdays are the weekdays kept for her.
Can it be done at home without a priest?
A simple household puja with lamp, flowers, dhoop and the recitation of her names can certainly be done at home - see the hundred and eight names of Maa Tara. The larger nighttime Kali Puja with its full ritual is usually done by a priest, and that is the sensible course for it.
