Bilvashtakam

The Bilvashtakam — eight verses on the glory of offering the sacred bilva (bel) leaf to Lord Shiva.

त्रिदलं त्रिगुणाकारं त्रिनेत्रं च त्रियायुधम्।
त्रिजन्मपापसंहारम् एकबिल्वं शिवार्पणम्॥१॥

त्रिशाखैः बिल्वपत्रैश्च अच्छिद्रैः कोमलैः शुभैः।
तवपूजां करिष्यामि एकबिल्वं शिवार्पणम्॥२॥

दर्शनं बिल्ववृक्षस्य स्पर्शनं पापनाशनम्।
अघोरपापसंहारम् एकबिल्वं शिवार्पणम्॥३॥

सालग्रामशिलामेकां विप्राणां जातु चार्पयेत्।
सोमयज्ञमहापुण्यम् एकबिल्वं शिवार्पणम्॥४॥

दन्तिकोटिसहस्राणि वाजपेयशतानि च।
कोटिकन्यामहादानम् एकबिल्वं शिवार्पणम्॥५॥

लक्ष्म्यास्तनुत उत्पन्नं महादेवस्य च प्रियम्।
बिल्ववृक्षं प्रयच्छामि एकबिल्वं शिवार्पणम्॥६॥

दर्शनं बिल्ववृक्षस्य स्पर्शनं पापनाशनम्।
अघोरपापसंहारम् एकबिल्वं शिवार्पणम्॥७॥

मूलतो ब्रह्मरूपाय मध्यतो विष्णुरूपिणे।
अग्रतः शिवरूपाय एकबिल्वं शिवार्पणम्॥८॥

बिल्वाष्टकमिदं पुण्यं यः पठेच्छिवसन्निधौ।
शिवलोकमवाप्नोति एकबिल्वं शिवार्पणम्॥

tridalam trigunakaram trinetram cha triyayudham।
trijanmapapasamharam ekabilvam shivarpanam॥1॥

trishakhaih bilvapatraishcha achchhidraih komalaih shubhaih।
tavapujam karishyami ekabilvam shivarpanam॥2॥

darshanam bilvavrikshasya sparshanam papanashanam।
aghorapapasamharam ekabilvam shivarpanam॥3॥

salagramashilamekam vipranam jatu charpayet।
somayajnamahapunyam ekabilvam shivarpanam॥4॥

dantikotisahasrani vajapeyashatani cha।
kotikanyamahadanam ekabilvam shivarpanam॥5॥

lakshmyastanuta utpannam mahadevasya cha priyam।
bilvavriksham prayachchhami ekabilvam shivarpanam॥6॥

darshanam bilvavrikshasya sparshanam papanashanam।
aghorapapasamharam ekabilvam shivarpanam॥7॥

mulato brahmarupaya madhyato vishnurupine।
agratah shivarupaya ekabilvam shivarpanam॥8॥

bilvashtakamidam punyam yah pathechchhivasannidhau।
shivalokamavapnoti ekabilvam shivarpanam॥

About the Bilvashtakam

The Bilvashtakam — eight verses on the glory of offering the sacred bilva (bel) leaf to Lord Shiva.

Meaning

Each verse describes the three-leafed bilva patra as embodying the three gunas, the trident and the three eyes of Shiva, and offers it at his feet seeking forgiveness for sins.

Benefits

Recited while offering bel leaves in Shiva worship, especially on Mondays and Shivratri, to wash away sins and earn Shiva's grace, health and prosperity.
