Who is the Jagdish of this aarti?
Jagdish means the Lord of the universe - Bhagwan Vishnu. That is why this one aarti closes worship of almost any deity in most homes: the name addresses the supreme Lord rather than one particular form, so it fits a Satyanarayan puja, a Diwali puja or an ordinary evening lamp equally.
When is it sung?
At the end of the puja, after the naivedya has been offered - aarti is the last of the upacharas. In most households it is sung twice a day at the evening and morning lamp, and it is the standard closing for katha and satsang gatherings.
What does the line Mat-pita tum mere mean?
You are my mother and my father, whose shelter shall I seek but yours. It is the emotional centre of the aarti - the devotee gives up every other claim of support and rests the whole weight of life on the Lord, which is why the verse is sung with such feeling.
How is the lamp moved during aarti?
Clockwise, in front of the deity - traditionally four circles at the feet, two at the navel, one at the face and seven over the whole form, though most homes simply circle it steadily throughout the singing. The bell, conch and clapping keep time with it.
