Frequently asked questions about Mahashivratri Vrat & Puja Samagri List
What is needed for Mahashivratri?
Bel patra, dhatura and aak, bhang, shami leaves and white flowers; the abhishek set of panchamrit, Gangajal, sugarcane juice and rose water; bhasma and rudraksha; and the vrat food - kuttu, singhara and thandai - along with the common essentials.
Why are the quantities larger than for an ordinary Shiva puja?
Because the night is kept in four prahar pujas, with an abhishek at each. Buy roughly four times what a single puja needs of bel patra, milk and flowers, or the offerings run out before the last watch.
What is offered in each of the four prahars?
Tradition assigns them different liquids - milk in the first, curd in the second, ghee in the third and honey in the fourth, each followed by water. Practice varies, and many households simply repeat a water-and-milk abhishek four times.
What should not be offered?
Tulsi, ketaki flowers and haldi are kept out of a Shiva puja, on Mahashivratri as on any other day. Bel patra should be whole and unbroken, and it is gathered the day before since it is not plucked on the day.
What is eaten during the fast?
Fruit, milk, thandai, and phalahar foods made of kuttu or singhara flour with sendha namak if a full fast is not kept. The fast is broken the next morning after the night's worship. See the vrat vidhi for the permitted and avoided foods in full.
