About the Mangal Mantra - Om Kraam Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah

The Mangal Mantra — the beej mantra of Mangal / Bhauma (Mars), chanted for courage, energy and relief from Mangal dosha.

Meaning

With the seed-syllables of Mars, the mantra bows to Bhauma (Mangal), the red planet, son of the Earth, bestower of valour and energy.

Benefits

Chanted on Tuesdays to strengthen Mars, gain courage, energy and strength, ease Mangal dosha and overcome conflict and obstacles.

How the Mantra Is Built

The seeds Kraam Kreem Kraum carry the martial sound ka — sharp, cutting, fiery — through the three vowel energies, with Sah as the release and Bhaumaya Namah as the salutation: "to Bhauma," Mars as the son of Bhumi, the Earth. Mars in the Vedic scheme is raw energy — courage, brothers, land and property, engineering and the soldier's virtues — which blesses when directed and burns when it is not. The mantra is chanted to direct it.

How to Chant

Chant on Tuesdays, in the morning, facing south (Mars's direction); red is his colour — a red asana, red flowers, masoor dal and jaggery are the traditional offerings. The classical vowed count for Mangal is 10,000 repetitions; weekly practice is one mala of 108 every Tuesday. Worship of Hanuman or Kartikeya on the same day is the folk companion of the Mangal mantra, since both deities govern the Mars principle.

When Astrology Prescribes It

This is the classical mantra remedy for Mangal Dosha — Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of the birth chart, the placement weighed in every traditional marriage match — and for Mars afflictions showing as anger, accidents, disputes over property, or conflict with siblings. It is chanted through Mangal dasha and on Tuesdays generally. Check your own chart with the Manglik Dosha calculator.

Alongside the japa, tradition prescribes Tuesday charity of red lentils (masoor), red cloth or jaggery, recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa — Hanuman embodies the Mars principle in its perfected, devoted form — and worship of Kartikeya, the commander who governs the planet. The gemstone of Mars is red coral (moonga), worn only after the chart has been examined. Physical discipline is Mars's own offering: early rising, exercise and honest labour please Bhauma as much as any recitation.
