Bahut samay pehle ek nagar mein Veervati naam ki ek sundar aur susheel kanya rehti thi. Woh apne saat bhaaiyon ki ekloti aur ladli behan thi. Saaton bhaai use praanon se bhi adhik chaahte the, aur Veervati bhi apne bhaaiyon par apna sab kuch nyochhaavar karne ko taiyaar rehti. Samay aane par uska vivah ek yogya var se hua, aur sasuraal mein bhi woh apne susheel svabhaav ke kaaran sabki priya ban gayi.
Vivah ke baad jab uske jeevan ka pehla Karwa Chauth aaya, to Veervati apne maayke aayi hui thi. Suhaagin striyon ke saath usne bhi sankalp lekar nirjala vrat — bina ann aur jal grahan kiye — rakha. Suraj dhalte-dhalte din bhar ki bhookh-pyaas se woh kamzor ho gayi aur chandrma ke uday ki prateeksha karte hue murjhaane lagi. Uska mukh peela pad gaya.
Apni laadli behan ki yeh dasha bhaaiyon se dekhi na gayi. Unke hriday vyakul ho uthhe. Behan ka kasht door karne ke liye unhone ek upaay socha — nagar ke baahar peepal ke ped par chadhkar ek chhalni ke peeche deepak jalaakar nakli chand chamkaa diya. Bhaaiyon ne aakar kaha — "Dekho behan, chand nikal aaya, ab arghya dekar bhojan kar lo." Bhole man se Veervati ne use sachcha chand samajhkar arghya diya aur vrat khol liya.
Par vrat ke niyam bina vidhi ke, chhal se tootne ka parinaam bhayankar tha. Pehla niwala mukh mein jaate hi use chheenkne aur baal milne lage, aur teesre niwale par samachar aaya ki uske pati ka achaanak dehant ho gaya. Yeh sunte hi Veervati shok se vyaakul ho gayi aur vilaap karne lagi.
Usi raat Maa Parvati (Karwa Mata) prakat huin aur unhone Veervati ko bataya ki bhaaiyon ke chhal se, bina vidhi ke vrat tootne ke kaaran hi yeh anarth hua hai. Devi ke aadesh par Veervati ne agle varsh poore vidhi-vidhan, niyam aur achal shraddha se Karwa Chauth ka vrat phir se rakha, chandrma ko vidhivat arghya diya aur pati ke deerghaayu ki kaamna ki. Uski sachhi tapasya se prasann hokar Karwa Mata ne uske pati ko punarjeevan de diya. Veervati ka suhaag akhand ho gaya.
