Kali Mantra - Om Kreem Kalikaye Namah

The Kali Mantra — "Om Kreem Kalikaye Namah", the seed (beej) mantra of Goddess Kali, the fierce form of the Divine Mother.

With the powerful seed "Kreem" — the beej of Kali — the mantra bows to Kalika, the dark Goddess who destroys ego, evil and the fear of death and grants liberation.

Word by Word Meaning

Om — the Pranava. Kreem — the Kali-beej, the most concentrated of the Shakti seeds: ka (Kali, the power of time), ra (fire), ee (energy), sealed by the anusvara. The tradition calls it the seed of transformation — what enters Kreem does not come out unchanged. Kalikayai — unto Kalika, the Goddess as Time (kala) itself, she who devours all that is false and temporary. Namah — salutation.

"Om Kreem, salutation to Kalika." Kali's fierce image — dark, garlanded, tongue out, dancing on Shiva — is read by devotees as the fierce face of a mother: terrifying to what harms her child, tender beyond measure to the child itself.

How to Chant

Chant 108 repetitions at night or at dusk — Kali is worshipped in the dark half of the day — facing north, before a lamp. Amavasya (the new-moon night) is her monthly high day, and Kali Puja, held on the Amavasya of Diwali, is the great annual occasion. Saturdays and Tuesdays suit weekly practice. Keep the japa inward and disciplined: the tradition is emphatic that Kali sadhana asks for truthfulness and courage, not spectacle.

Who Chants It, and When

Those in the grip of fear, grief or crushing circumstance turn to Kali, because she is the power that ends what must end; her mantra is chanted to cut through addiction, oppression, fear of death and paralysing attachment. Bengal keeps her as its beloved household Mother. Devotional repetition of the salutation mantra is open to all; intensive Kreem sadhana belongs, by long tradition, under a guru's guidance.

Kali's terrifying form dissolves, in the tradition's reading, into reassurance. The garland of heads is the ego's many masks, removed; the skirt of arms is accumulated karma, cut away; the outstretched tongue is the shame the devotee no longer needs to carry; and the foot on Shiva's chest shows energy resting at last on pure stillness. Ramakrishna, her most famous modern devotee, called her simply "Mother" — and that word, said honestly, is held to be as powerful as the seed syllable itself.
