Praacheen samay mein ek nagar mein ek dhanwaan saahukar rehta tha, jiske saat bete the. Uske ghar mein dhan-dhaanya, vaibhav aur sukh ki koi kami na thi. Diwali se kuch din pehle, Kartik maas ke Krishna paksha ki Ashtami ke aas-paas, ghar ki lipaai-putaai ke liye saahukar ki patni achchhi chikni mitti laane jungle ki ore gayi.

Mitti khodte samay, mitti ke ek bil mein chhupe sahi (sehi/syaahu) ke kuch bachche us striki kudaal ki chot se anjaane mein mar gaye. Yeh dekhkar woh stree atyant dukhi aur pashchaataap se bhar gayi, par jo anarth ho chuka tha use lautaaya nahi jaa sakta tha. Bhaari man se woh ghar laut aayi.

Us anjaane paap ke prabhav se kuch hi samay mein uske ek-ek karke saaton bete kaal ke gaal mein samaane lage. Putron ki mrityu se ghar mein haahaakaar mach gaya aur woh stree shok mein doob gayi. Vyathit hokar usne nagar ki vriddh striyon aur vidvaano ko apni vyatha sunaayi aur upaay poochha.

Vidvaanon ne bataaya - "Tumne anjaane mein Ashtami ke aas-paas Sahi-Maata (Ahoi Maata / Syaahu Maata) ke bachchon ko maara hai, isi paap ka yeh phal hai. Tum shraddha se Kartik Krishna Ashtami ko Ahoi Maata ka vrat karo, deewaar par Ahoi Maata tatha unke bachchon ka chitra banaakar puja karo aur santaan ki kushalta ki kaamna karte hue kshama maango."

Stree ne nirjala vrat rakha, deewaar par Ahoi Maata aur sahi ke bachchon ka chitra banaaya, shraddha se puja ki, kahaani suni aur taaron ko arghya dekar vrat khola. Apne kiye par sachche man se pashchaataap aur shraddha dekhkar Ahoi Maata prasann huin. Unki kripa se us stree ke ujadte ghar mein phir se khushiyaan laut aayin - uski santaanen surakshit, svasth aur deerghaayu huin, aur uska parivaar phir se phoola-phala.

Seekh: Ahoi Ashtami ka vrat maataayein apni santaan ki deerghaayu, aarogya aur unnati ke liye rakhti hain. Yeh vrat ahimsa, jeev-daya aur santaan-prem ka sandesh deta hai - anjaane mein hui bhool ka bhi sachche pashchaataap aur shraddha se nivaaran sambhav hai.

प्राचीन समय में एक नगर में एक धनवान साहूकार रहता था, जिसके सात बेटे थे। उसके घर में धन-धान्य, वैभव और सुख की कोई कमी न थी। दिवाली से कुछ दिन पहले, कार्तिक मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की अष्टमी के आस-पास, घर की लिपाई-पुताई के लिए साहूकार की पत्नी अच्छी चिकनी मिट्टी लाने जंगल की ओर गई।

मिट्टी खोदते समय, मिट्टी के एक बिल में छुपे साही (सेह/स्याहु) के कुछ बच्चे उस स्त्री की कुदाल की चोट से अनजाने में मर गए। यह देखकर वह स्त्री अत्यंत दुखी और पश्चाताप से भर गई, पर जो अनर्थ हो चुका था उसे लौटाया नहीं जा सकता था। भारी मन से वह घर लौट आई।

उस अनजाने पाप के प्रभाव से कुछ ही समय में उसके एक-एक करके सातों बेटे काल के गाल में समाने लगे। पुत्रों की मृत्यु से घर में हाहाकार मच गया और वह स्त्री शोक में डूब गई। व्यथित होकर उसने नगर की वृद्ध स्त्रियों और विद्वानों को अपनी व्यथा सुनाई और उपाय पूछा।

विद्वानों ने बताया - "तुमने अनजाने में अष्टमी के आस-पास साही-माता (अहोई माता / स्याहु माता) के बच्चों को मारा है, इसी पाप का यह फल है। तुम श्रद्धा से कार्तिक कृष्ण अष्टमी को अहोई माता का व्रत करो, दीवार पर अहोई माता तथा उनके बच्चों का चित्र बनाकर पूजा करो और संतान की कुशलता की कामना करते हुए क्षमा माँगो।"

स्त्री ने निर्जला व्रत रखा, दीवार पर अहोई माता और साही के बच्चों का चित्र बनाया, श्रद्धा से पूजा की, कहानी सुनी और तारों को अर्घ्य देकर व्रत खोला। अपने किए पर सच्चे मन से पश्चाताप और श्रद्धा देखकर अहोई माता प्रसन्न हुईं। उनकी कृपा से उस स्त्री के उजड़ते घर में फिर से खुशियाँ लौट आईं - उसकी संतानें सुरक्षित, स्वस्थ और दीर्घायु हुईं, और उसका परिवार फिर से फूला-फला।

शिक्षा: अहोई अष्टमी का व्रत माताएँ अपनी संतान की दीर्घायु, आरोग्य और उन्नति के लिए रखती हैं। यह व्रत अहिंसा, जीव-दया और संतान-प्रेम का संदेश देता है - अनजाने में हुई भूल का भी सच्चे पश्चाताप और श्रद्धा से निवारण संभव है।

No - and this is the usual point of confusion with Karwa Chauth. Ahoi Ashtami is broken after sighting the stars in the evening, not the moon. Mothers offer arghya to the stars, then take the first food of the day.

Why is Ahoi Mata drawn on the wall?

Because the katha turns on the sehi and her cubs. The wall drawing shows Ahoi Mata together with the sehi's young, the very lives lost by accident in the story, and the puja is offered to that picture. Many households now use a printed image instead of drawing it by hand.

What does the story mean?

It is about harm done without intending it, and the sincerity of making amends. The merchant's wife struck the cubs while digging clay, unaware, and the grief that followed was undone by genuine repentance rather than by ritual alone.
